Re: Build for home studio music production - thoughts?

No, that's just an option I might go for later if the price keeps falling. I already have quiet HDDs, the SDD is just for speed, or to avoid hiccups, if you will.

Re: Build for home studio music production - thoughts?

I recommend that you get an Intel brand SSD. Here is why: http://www.silentpcreview.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=555692#p555692 Thanks, I will! And I'll stay far away from OCZ - those are horrible return rates. SSD: Kingston used to be very popular for SSD's but as of late, I haven't heard much about...

Build for home studio music production - thoughts?

Hi SPCR silencing experts! Long time member (but no longer up-to-date) seeking informed opinion on CPU and MB replacement kit. I am doing home studio music production, so a quiet, stable AND mid-high performance PC is a must. Relatively low power consumption at idle is also quite important, as is ex...

IMO fanless PSUs are a cop-out, unless your machine is really, really quiet. I have the S-12, 330 model, and my Barracuda IV 80Gb and Samsung Spinpoint 160 Gb make much more noise together than it does. But if one uses 2,5" HDs, there might be something to gain. The S-12 really is very quiet.

Good luck, because I'm not offering any guarantees.

btw, you may want to put a big blob of thermal paste on the chip when you mount the HS, the contact isn't as precise as on a CPU. Pile pressure on, and the excess gets pushed to the side, anyway.

thanks. My case is this fella here . I have cut out the grills on the lowest exhaust fan opening and put my nexus there. Something else that probably makes a huge difference: I have removed every single PCI slot cover below the GPU, quite unrelated to the VF700, though. I've simply used every slot o...

Like I wrote, my GPU temps do not exceed 85 degrees Celcius, at load, without any fan. I use the Nvidia drivers to check temps. And I do have the extra 12v power cable attached. My noise tolerance is way below yours, since at 5 volt the Zalman fan was clearly the most annoying element in my pc. Mayb...

Passive 6600GT using a VF700...a nice surprise.

I'd just like to share my new solution with the good people of SPCR. I simply put a VF700-Cu without a fan on a 6600GT. The Zalman fan has an annoying sound quality, even at 3 volts, and it offended me, so I plucked it out. I expected to have to point a quiet 80mm fan at the 6600GT, but it runs effo...

Quick question, quick answers

Just this: Which pumps out more heat, a 2.4 Ghz AMD64 Newcastle, or a 2 Ghz Athlon-XP Thoroughbred? Since AMD only ever states max output, it's too much for my little brain to compute.

thanks in advance for any answers.

80mm fan K8 heatsink

I'm looking for an AMD64 heatsink that takes an 80mm fan. And it has to be cheaper than the Thermalright models...that rules out the XP-90.

any recommendations?

Here in Denmark Turion laptops are slightly more expensive than Dothan Centrinos.

Now why, now why is that? mmm?

I'd like to see the Sempron-M compared to the old Centrino.

Thanks for that. Now can you make any easy, constructive suggestions that a layman like myself could do? Sure! Get two 80mm Nexus fans and replace the Vantec and the fan on the Silent Boost. You'll have higher temperatures, but you won't look back. This is SPCR....ripe with fanaticism.

You have a noisy computer if you think your Stealth fan and an unmodded Silent Boost are quiet. :o

yes, I think that the new system would be substantially less loud. but if you're not going to suspend those HDs, it's going to growl and bark when writing data. It's just that the rest of the system sounds wonderful. Would be a shame to, um, ruin it. What are you using it for? And how will you cool ...

What PSU?

A Samsung HD is likely to be more quiet than a Seagate. No guarantees, though.

If you use the Sonic Booom! Tower heatsink, you should be very careful when moving it around. Some would probably take it off before moving the computer, then put it back on when moved, out of caution.

for the life of me, I can't understand why no at least semi-respected site has made a thorough test of home vs factory lapping on different heatsinks, and mirror vs rough finish, with scientific methodology and that. One such test would put a lot of ghosts to rest.

Nudge, nudge.

Nice! You haven't by any chance considered running the CPU fanless, with some rigorous undervolting? With an XP120, a Winchester, and two 120mm fans as exhausts, you should stand a decent chance.

Since you're not overcocking, and your system is stable, the only thing you should worry about is HD temps. I like to keep mine under 40 degrees.
