How does a motherboard measure temps

Anyone knows the technical details about how a motherboard can measure the temperature of the surrounding air? What kind of sensors are used? How do they work?

A google search on thermal diode will give you lots of relevant hits. Here's one:

A thermal diode is a heat engine which converts a heat difference directly into electric power.

There are two types. One uses semiconductor thermocouples, working on the principles of the Peltier-Seebeck effect.

A transistor is used in CPUs for this function.
