Asus and Haswell based ChromeBox

Post by CA_Steve » Tue Feb 04, 2014 9:31 am

info at Anandtech

Fanless, Haswell, SSD, HDMI and Displayport, NIC, 802.11n, BT, USB3 ports. Seems like a wonderful start to a HTPC front end. It'd be cool if Steam Streaming works with it.

It does have a fan. :(

But reviews say it is quiet. This review says:
it’s virtually silent. Under load you might hear the faintest of whir if you put your ear up next to the machine, but you literally have to try to hear it.
Of course what some people say they "have to try to hear" is too loud for us. Sounds promising though.

If anyone tries one, please let us know how quiet it really is.

Edit. The reply above didn't show up when I posted. :?

Not fanless. :(

ASUS Chromebox Review « AnandTech
Despite ASUS’ initial claims that its Chromebox would be fanless, there is a single fan inside the machine. Air is brought in through the bottom and vented through the back of the chassis. Fan noise is minimal, and it is entirely possible to run the machine without the fan spinning up but open up enough tabs and you’ll find the fan humming away all the time. My review unit was a development unit, which ASUS claims was a bit louder than final retail units will be. Given the low performance requirements of Chrome OS and the low thermal footprint of the Haswell based Celeron inside, noise isn’t an issue with the ASUS Chromebox.

Yep, bad early info. On the other hand, it'd still be inaudible as an HTPC streamer and a 10' UI. :)
