Nexus Caterpillar v1 --- advices on increasing airflow

Post by badsykes » Fri Aug 29, 2014 2:05 am

Hi all!

I am new around here but not new in silence components..First my rig

I5 750 at 3.4 cooled by Scythe Kama Angle Rev. B..Thermal compound is a DeepCool Z5..
Kingston 8gb ram (4 sticks)
6950 2gb exorcised to a 6970 but with 6950 stock frequencies cooled by Accelero twin turbo pro
Asus Maximus III formula
Windows 7 x64 with all "flaws"(ironicaly speaking about security updates) installed up to date
Nexus caterpillar v1
2x Nexus Led fans 120mm transparent

If i have the case open i get temps in idle at 3.4ghz

Core1: 51C
Core2: 46C
Core3: 49C
Core4: 47C

And load with prime 95 for 20 minutes at 3.4ghz

Core1: 62C
Core2: 58C
Core3: 58C
Core4: 59C

If i close the case in load at 3.4ghz:

Core1: 69-70C
Core2: 65C
Core3: 65C
Core4: 66C

Initially i wanted to buy a new cooler but after a while i had an idea to test with open case so now i think the case airflow is the culprit for high temps...
Any advice how to improve the case airflow..I may buy some new fans..Maybe the Nexus silent ones have too low airflow especially the front one...
I am thinking if i swap the front fan for a higher rpm one may increase the airflow...So i am thinking at two fans:
Scythe Slip Stream 120 pwm 1200rpm or Noctua NF S12A FLX or Noiseblocked BlackSilent Pro...

Best regards

Welcome to SPCR.

jmke @ Madshrimps reviewed this case in Dec 2007. Also found an airflow issue, but with just the dual core e6400, the issue was a really hot GPU.

The CPU load temps aren't horrible for a stress test. They are still in the ok range. What are the CPU idle temps with the door open?

What temps do you see with CPU and GPU when in normal use (games, for example).

What temps do you see with CPU/GPU when running Afterburner or OCCT?

Did you replace the black and white Real Silent fans with the LED fans? If so, try putting the Real Silents back and see what you get.

Hi

thx for the answer..

I have only Nexus White Led Fans 120 mm that are transparent..They are rated 18db / 1000 rpm / 37 CFM
The noctua Flx 12B/A looks interesting because it have the same 18db / 1000 rpm but 59 CFM and the blades are different for case ventilation..

"What are the CPU idle temps with the door open? "

If i have the case open i get temps in idle at 3.4ghz OCCT
Core0 47C
Core1 42C
Core2 45C
Core3 42C

"What temps do you see with CPU/GPU when running Afterburner or OCCT?"

Core0 59C
Core1 55C
Core2 55C
Core3 55C

In games i haven't got a chance to measure...I will come up with a result soon..Anyway they should be less than stress test

My brain is fried....I'm looking to see CPU idle temps with
- door open
- door closed

I thought your 1st post had case closed...but when I re-read it's with case open. Then in your 2nd post you show 4C lower temps with case open...are you using different s/w to read these two measurements?

Also, I mispoke...mean to say Furmark or OCCT video stress tests not Afterburner  Really need to GPU temps for these @ idle/load for open/closed..but really, if you get reasonable temps gaming or whatever apps you use, don't stress over stress test temps :D

At first glance, the CPU is doing ok.

jumping in to save some keystrokes...

no real need to give multiple core temps, just give the highest one. (unless the deviation is near 10*C)

There is a limit to what can be done with this particular case due to its single 120mm input fan and single 120mm exhaust. The Real Silent has a nominal top speed of 1000 rpm but maximum rpm is more like 1100. The Mk 1 Caterpillar was designed to run the fans at full speed with both of them connected direct the PSU. I assume you replaced the original fans with the LED version so that motherboard fan control could be used. With your motherboard this should allow the fans to run at idle from 7V upwards, giving a minimum idle speed of around 700 rpm. So given that your current fan control range is around 700 to 1100 prm replacing the Real Silents with a 1200 rpm fan like the Noctua NF-F12B, despite the claimed airflow figures, may not in practice make very much difference. The CPU temperature figures quoted are OK for a processor stressed by Prime95 but I suspect that GPU temperatures are more of an issue. Given the limitations of the Caterpillar a replacement case is probably a better option than buying faster case fans.

Ok..i've done some tests with close case with prime 95..AIda64 and OCCT temps are measured differently.Aida64 gone to 67C and OCCT remained around 64C..I runned 3 softwares in parallel OCCT, Aida64 and prime95..
On GPU side the temp durring game is 50C with Afterburner left in background and playing Wolfenstein the new order...The intersting thing is the GPU is not used 100%...The graph is very uneven...Max i saw was 74%...
lodestar:The case was bought NEW ...but... i had a bit of fun ... THe box came re-sealed and the fans weren't in the box..I talked to the shop and to Nexus about the fact..The shop answered later and Nexus answered first...I was skeptical that the shop will trust me and sent the fans so i told nexus too..Both the shop and Nexus sent me 2 fans LEDs...Basically i have 4 Real Silent 120mm Leds White...So Cheers to Nexus for their support..It wasn't Nexus fault but they did sent me 2 fans anyway..

So, the answer is: temps are fine. There's no reason to increase the airflow.
