Fractal Design Define R4 Vs P183

Hi,

Image

Is anyone able to advise if the Fractal Design Define R4 PC Case is considered to dampen sound more significantly compared with a P183 Antec?

I'm building a potential system together which I would probably build with 6700k towards the end of the year.

I like what I have read of the R4, I was just wondering in comparison with what I have how much difference will I expect.

Like most people I have read about, I built a 2600k system, I went for all performance and didn't consider noise until it drove me mental. This machine I will try to make as fanless as possible.

Welcome to SPCR.

At this point, take a look at the Fractal Define R5 or Define S. As always, a case is only as quiet as what's inside it.

I understand that the variables can make a massive impact.

How if I asked you in a different perspective.

If you installed your kit from the R4, which I assume you own from your signature, into a P183. Would you expect to notice more sound leaking from your machine?

The P183 is a little more focused on dampening and quiet operation, but if all other things are equal, you shouldn't notice much difference with well-chosen components. Striving for fanless operation can sometimes be counter-productive if you want to maintain a level of performance - good quality fans at low rpms are often preferable for maintaining a moderate level of airflow across key components.

I'd expect it would sound similar and have warmer component temps due to inferior air flow / 120mm fans vs 140mm. The only thing I hear is my gfx card fans at idle...because I haven't modded the gfx card, yet. :)

Truly, they are both great cases...just look at the crazy silent gaming build Puget Systems did in a P183. However, I think the case is a little long in the tooth feature-wise.

as a rule of thumb, a case that "leaks" less sound, also has less airflow. - so its fans run faster, trying to keep it cool, thus making more noise.

IMO the best case is one with great airflow, that contains carefully selected, quiet, and possibly modded, components.
