Help me choosing a silent case please!

Post by Alsilence » Wed Jan 04, 2017 4:20 am

Hello i was reading some post in the forum but i can´t decide something that fits my needs.

My budget is around 80-90 €.

First of all, window or not? Does it make a noticeable difference in noise terms?

And i choose some options, like fractal define s, fractal define c, cooler master silencio 550...

Please help xd.

Thank you.

Welcome to SPCR!!!!

Would be useful for you to post what you plan inside so they can give you a better recommendation, also if you plan to OC etc.

Mm i don´t know xd, i think the same hardware i have at the moment.
6700k, a cryorig h5 (wich i think i should change the fans i know...) and a 1060, although i´ll probably change the gpu soon.
Also i use only a big ssd, i don´t have any hdd.
I´m not going to put a custom liquid cool system or something like that.

Thank you!

Is the mobo size ATX, uATX,...?

Do you have an optical drive / need for a 5.25" drive slot in the case?

Nope, i don´t need an optical drive but it´s not a problem if the case has a bay.

window: impact is generally minimal...but depends on the case and mfgr. Fractal does a decent job.

The Define S and C are good choices.

Is there a big difference between define s and c in noise levels?
I like define c the most, because it´s "compact" design. But i only saw reviews of the define s.
They have the same quality?

Also is the best option in that price range?

Thank you

There isn't a SPCR review of the C, and I haven't seen any comparable reviews with a decent acoustic test room....but, here's Tech Report's comparison using a higher power load than what you have. The S has the potential to provide more cooling than the C. That's the biggest difference.

other stuff...

C: max GPU length 12.4", max CPU cooler height 168-170mm (windowed vs non-), will want a modular PSU as the area is shared with drive cage. With drive cage max length recommended is 175mm. w/o cage 228mm.

S: max GPU 16.7", cooler 180mm, PSU 300mm unless bottom mounted fan which shortens max length to 170mm (140mm fan). No reason for a bottom fan, though.

I see, so they have almost the same noise level.
It´s a little weird considering the c has 120mm fans while the s has 140mm.

Also considering the r5, the non windowed is only 10€ more expensive so...
Or maybe it´s an overkill?

I´m looking for the quieter one, that´s the only thing that worries me.

Thank you.

The S is the R5...

with: a third front fan slot which you most likely don't need

without:
- fan controller - which you probably won't use as the mobo fan control is generally better
- Optical drive
- drive cages.

Otherwise, the same. Go for the size and features you want and don't sweat the noise thing. Your gfx card will overrule everything else.

Well i think first of all i should explain something.
I´m thinking about changin the case looking for something quieter.
At the moment i have a phanteks enthoo pro m, and because its flimsy panels i was wondering if a thicker case would make the system quieter.

Maybe it´s a waste of money and should keep my case if there is not a huge difference...

It comes down to fans and fan controls, and the graphics card for noise, most of the time.

I have the same case and the only thing that would make it better is a closed front and larger intakes on the sides of the front, for indirect sound path. Like the R5 / Define S, but this is not a big deal.

So changing to a r5/c i won´t notice a big difference?
You think I´d better stay with the phanteks right?

What is make the most noise in you system now? The case is more important on how it affects air flow - the sturdiness of our case is pretty good.

Mmmm under load the gpu fans.

Idle, the cpu fan and a weird low pitch humming from the psu that goes through the case frame...
