Air flow vs silent based cases- Gamers Nexus

Steve Burke from Gamers Nexus takes on the question of whether you can achieve the same quietness in an open mesh case as you can in a silence-focused case:

They tested powerful gaming PC in BeQuiet 601 with stock 2 fans, doesn't seem like a fair comparison, it shouldn't be used like that.

Also there are other noises besides fans: coil whine, HDD vibration, ...
Maybe BeQuiet is better for that.

I agree that the shown "test" doesn't answer the given question. Not one bit!

The key factor is power consumption:
- For high power builds (>250W or so) an open design is better unless thy use a custom water loop with a large external passive convector for cooling.
- Very low power builds (<100W) can be all (near) passively cooled with no problems.
- For moderate power builds a "closed" design will provide sufficient air flow and dampening.
