Folding with CUDA ready nVidia cards luring around corner

Post by spookmineer » Mon Jun 16, 2008 3:22 pm

Read some reviews of the new GTX260/280 cards and there were some reviews where an early Beta of this folding client can be seen.

CUDA ready Nvidia cards: series 8 and up.

nVidia GPU client
[don't pay attention to the team number, it's the wrong team 8) ]

GPU not just for games

In Dutch, but 2nd graph says a lot

It will be a single client for both ATi and nVidia cards.

Client is already folding!
Folding team "Whoopass":
For those who are keeping count: The GeForce GPU will be about 163 times faster than a quad-core processor in this specific application.
Even with just 4-5 test machines, the team quickly moved into the top 5% of all contributors by sheer processing power. Dr. Vijay told us that if only 1% of all CUDA-capable users would start using Folding@Home in their spare time, the Folding@Home machine would quickly be considered the fastest performing HPC computer in the whole world – hitting about 60-80 Peta FLOPS of processing power.
Mindboggling:

We need to get people aware here what's going on, make some posts over on the video forum or a general message - something!

I'd like to see a sticky over on Cool & Quiet Video forum, and a mention on the home page right here.

A $99 8800 GS video card will earn more points than my 3 dual cores and use about 60 watts an hour. I think if people knew how easy it is to get over 4000PPD they would be more willing to try.
