Best option for CPU HS?

Post by Gunde » Sat Feb 24, 2007 6:50 am

This is my current setup

P4 Prescott, 3.2 GHz w/ stock Intel HS+Fan.
Abit AG8 3rd-Eye MoBo
1 GB TwinMOS DDR RAM
Asus Radeon X700 Pro.
Creative SB Live! 1024 Sound Card.
NEC DVD-RW ND-3500AG.
Maxtor 200 GB SATA HDD
Seagate 250 GB SATA HDD.
Thermaltake sViking Case. w/ stock 120mm case-fans.

The noisiest fan is by far the stock one from Intel. Under load the fan gets really loud.
So I've been thinking about upgrading to a really good HS, and I've looked around SPCR a bit and found a few options.

The Thermalright Ultra 120, Scythe Ninja and a few others. But the thing is, I'm not sure whether or not these will actually fit with my motherboard.
I think that the Ultra 120 will fit if I replace my northbridge fan with the Revoltec Northbrigde one. But I would like some input on this, since I really don't want to waste money on something that won't fit.

If this is your mobo, then I think any of the HSF's you listed would work.

After replacing the CPU heatsink, you will most likely want to do something about the northbridge fan. So make sure whatever you pick leaves room for a passive northbridge heatsink.
