Quiet DVD player (drive) ?

Post by MrBean » Wed Mar 28, 2007 1:49 pm

Looked for it here but cant find it...

Advice on a good, quiet DVD player ?

My computer is quiet, but all hell breaks loose when the dvd burner spins up

The drive doesnt need to be fast, just for movie/music playback.
Something that one would find in a normal home-dvd-player ?

There is a free utility, Nero Drivespeed, that can be used to slow down your DVD drive. That should make it quite a bit quieter. I've never used it myself . . .

plextor 760a or 760sa (sata version) is all I have come up with. it is quiet and has plextools for slowing it down. nothing beats my old pioneer which is almost inaudible 2 feet from it.

I use the Samsung 18xDVD SATA drives with my HTPC. They're cheap, they don't burn coasters, and they rarely make more noise than the hard drives.

Plus, SATA cables manage so much neater.

On a similar note, I'm putting together an HTPC and need to quieten my DVD drive. Trouble is I'm running Ubuntu and MythTV, so I can't run Nero Drivespeed.

Any ideas how I can stop my drive from sounding like a jet engine under linux? :)

Thanks.

You could try the eject -x command, with the x followed by a low number (but not 0, which means full speed) and the name of the drive. You could also try hdparm -E or speedcontrol -x, again followed by a low number and the name of the drive. I've never played with any of these myself, so YMMV.

I have an ASUS with "Quiet Track" that is subjectively pretty darn quiet.

How is your drive mounted?

Right now, just the "official" noisy, hard-mounted way. This is a DVD-E616A3 DVD-ROM that replaced an older generic drive that died. The ASUS is orders of magnitude quieter.
