Meassuring temperature and fan speed in new build?

Post by Morten74 » Thu Jun 14, 2007 2:30 am

Hi all

So, I finally got my new system ordered last night:

Antec Solo with Scythe S-Flex E instead of Tri-cool
Corsair HX520W
ASUS P5B Deluxe
Intel Core 2 Duo 6320
Thermalright Ultra120 with Scythe S-Flex E
Corsair XMS2 PC-5400 2x1GB
WD SE16 320GB 16MB SATA
ASUS 1814BLT DVD-RW
ASUS EN8500GT, 512MB

As I am completely new to all this meassuring fan speeds and temperatures, and silencing PCs, could someone give me some pointers on how to make the most of my new system;

1) How do I best meassure temperatures?
2) Can I control the fans with software (Speedfan, ASUS Q-Fan2, etc.) -if yes, any tips are welcome.
3) Any special considerations on where to mount DVD and HDD (e.g. mount DVD in top, middle or lower 5.25 drivebay etc.?)
4) Is there anything I need to be aware of when connecting the cables - the last time I assembled a PC = 6 years ago, the cables would only fit in one way (=the right way) :-)
5) Anything else that a newbie might benefit from

Thanks in advance

 Morten

My suggestion would be just to try those different programs. For temperature monitoring, Speedfan should work ok. I prefer a fan speed controller that doesn't require a software program to operate. YMMV

I really like this video when building a computer:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVJ5ZEbf6F4
I watched it like 3 times before I even touched the power button just to make sure I installed everything correctly! And luckily enough, the computer started up and worked well.

1.)best measure of temps is application called "coretemp"
speedfan works well too, it reads the exact same temps as coretemp
2.) speedfan may or may not work well. From what I have heard, it can control the CPU fan independently but the other three case fans are all controlled together
3.)It probably shouldn't matter
4.)The youtube video should pretty much help you for the most part. If you still have questions, just ask :)
5.) You should check out under the DIY systems the project that Mike did called "silent pc for torrid Thailand" it will give you great tips for routing the cables and making the case neat and tidy.

Looks like a solid build, well chosen components
GOOD LUCK!!!
