Trying to build an cheap most silent AM2 setup

Hey there...

I'd be very grateful if you knowledgable folks would have a look at my shopping list and tell me where I could get a bit more for the money on the performance side without comprimising too much on the energy/silent side...

I'm especially concerned a bit about the coice of mobo... I do need SATA and preferably RAID, possibility for slight OC, and cool/efficient running... ah and the option for 8GB RAM. Do not question that please, shouldn't be part of the topic. Would a 5200+ non-EE Brisbane be the better choice than the Windsor? I'm even thinking if I may come away with the 4800+ Brisbane...

I have both a Biostar TA690G and Gigabyte equivilent. I use the Biostar daily and like it very much, overclocked and undervolted 3600 CPU. The chipset on the Biostar is much cooler than on the Gigabyte. I have not removed the heat sink on the Gigabyte and reinstalled with AS5 to check it, no time, sorry. I like Brisbanes, have 2, only have one other dual core somewhere, a 939 Toledo (?). Black 5000 seems to make a lot of people happy.

Ewiz SuperTalent RAM works great on both boards, inexpensive usually.

It says that it supports TA690Gs support 8GB, don't know in what confugration. You do the reading.

why not a 5000+ black edition? i guess I don't know if those run any cooler than that 5200, but if its 90nm chip, I imagine it to be cooler. Sure, less cache, but I kinda doubt you will notice the difference.

And why all the memory? What OS are you going to use that will utilize all that?

Well actually... is the 5000+ BE better than 5200+ EE or 5200+ Brisbane (even when slightly OCed to about the same level above them performance wise)? I don't know, and you do not seem to either... I asked not to question the RAM decision, it's for a special application you folks most probably don't have any idea of.

I opened a new topic for the CPU question, please discuss the CPU issues there...

Okay, out of interest: why all the ram?

Why two CPU-coolers by the way? (Freezer en Xigmatek.)
The Freezer is a good, cheap performer at quite low noise. Two of my housemates have it and they are very pleased with it. Don't know about the Xigmatek.

About the Rebel Case:
It is quite open (many holes). So, noise can easily get out (to your ears). It might not be your best choice for low noise. It has a lot of space though, but you list 1 Hd and no 5.25"-drive (although I think you're going to get one), so you don't need the space.
Instead, you can go with a Antec Solo/Sonata Designer, I'm very happy with mine. Enough space for your setup and very good for silencing. You can discouple the HD from the case (no vibrations). The Designer has a built in PSU (Earthwatts 500W). Good quality, but not the very best.

Finally someone reading what is in the list... actually I'm still undecided about which CPU-cooler I'll take, if the price difference is justifiable. The price difference is also, why I'm not leaning towards an Antec Solo solution because that's double the price of the Rebel. SO with the Rebel being quite open, I'd again lean tworads the more silent Xigmatek (which is said to be on par with the Scythe Mugen).

Oh and there will be 2 additional 120mm case fans and another HDD as well as a optical drive, it's just that I have these already lying around and therefore they don't appear on the shopping list.
