that phantom noise.

system:
Case: Thermaltake Armor
1 intake Yate Loon D12SL-12
1 exhaust Yate Loon
Thermalright ultra 120 with Nexus 800RPM
XFX 8800GT with fanless accelero s1
4xHDDs
Antec TPQ-850W PSU with a 80mm exhaust
Samsung DVD-RW

During startup there's a hissing noise until the login screen. Intermittently during use it hisses a little. During startup i've put my ear to everything and checked each part. I've removed the CPU fan and turned off all my fans to check everything out and the sound is still there. It sounds like it's coming from the RAM area.

Any suggestions?

Is it a hissing, or more of a squealing? If it's a really high-pitched squealing, then it almost definitely is coil-whine. Unfortunately, there's not much you can do about this other than putting some foam noise insulation in your case.

hey thanks, but i don't think it's coil whine. At first i thought it was a fan's bearing on the verge of dieing. So it sounded like bearings rubbing together. not that high pitched.

My guess would be start up voltage for the psu fan. You can do a pencil test the next time you start your computer.
