Advise on new ASUS Z87 motherboard, silent CPU cooler, case

Post by lanzia » Wed Nov 27, 2013 10:38 am

Hello all,

I want to build a new game PC and and I hope someone can advise me on a good ASUS z87 motherboard.
I will be using a 4770K and I also want a CPU air cooler that is very good but also silent.

Im after a new PC case and I hope you guys can advise me.

As my PC is located in the living room I want to keep the noise level low but I still want very good cooling.
I dont want anything with a window or too much lights and stuff.
Good build and design is importent, it must have decent cable management, tool les bays and good and easy reachable dust filters.
Also front USB 2 and 3 would be very nice.

What do you guys recommend?

Thanks in advance,

Lanzia

Welcome to SPCR. I moved your two posts here. It works out better to have just one thread on a build instead of having multiple threads in the various forums.

- Other than not flashy and no windows, do you have a preference on case/mobo size? ATX? mATX? Tower, tiny, etc...
- Gaming seldom uses hyperthreading, so unless you have other apps that make use of them, save $100 and get the i5.
- Do you plan to overclock or overvolt?
- what's your monitor resolution and what games do you play (this will lead to GPU selection, PSU selection, cooling).

Thanks for merging the post and here the answer to the questions above.

I will use the PC for gaming most of the time but I kind of started with video editing and I spend more and more time doing this so thats why I prefer the i7.
Also I play BF4 and this game does perform better on the i7.

I have no experience with overclocking but will certainly want to give it a shot with my new build.

My monitor resolution is 2560x1440, currently using a single GTX 680 that I will bring over to my new PC.

Most components I have already picked, or at least narrowed down the selection of it.
It will look something like this:

Motherboard: Asus maximus VI hero
CPU: i7 4770K
CPU cooler: Noctua NH-d14 or the NH-U14S
SSD: Samsung EVO 250 (OS and some games)
HDD: Seagate or WD (for large video files)
PSU: Seasonic G-550 or 650
Video: My current GTX 680
Case: No idea :)

Fractal Design Define R4 is a favorite ATX case.

Thank you. I noticed the Fractal Design R4. It looks like a good case indeed but just wondering if there is any better.
Im willing to spend more if there is anything better.

Define better. It's a solid case for gaming. Nice feature set, nice looks, easy to work with, in the top tier of quiet with decent airflow.

Others: Antec Solo II. May be slightly quieter, but will run hotter. Corsair 550D is pretty, but will run hotter.

If you have some extra $'s to use, consider getting a quieter PSU. The G series are great, but the X Gold series can run passive at lower loads, have slightly better efficiency and fan ramp. Also, Kingwin LZP-550 is a great Platinum rated PSU. (see reviews in the articles section).
