I personally think it's a lame name.

Couldn't they use Windows360 or something like that? How about Windows2006 (or 2007, depending)?

2000 is great, but XP has Movie Maker 2, which is a great "free" program. Why haven't you upgraded? Money or because of 2000's reliability?

I think it's lame as well, but then again, I could really care less what it's called, as long as it does its job. So my vote went to "Don't Care."

Working at a help desk I just envision myself asking:

"Are you using Windows 2000, XP, or....................VISTA."

I wonder if it comes in a pink theme...

not a huge fan of the names XP and vista but I don't care all that much. If they implented some of the DRM crap that could mess with my legally obtained stuff I'm not swtiching.

Great free program, which I'll have no use for.

I haven't upgraded because while 2000 works for me, I've heard pretty negative stuff about XP, and not enough positive stuff for me to bother switching. Its "OMG cute UI" focus doesn't really appeal to me.

I turn off all the "glam" in XP, so it looks just like 2000...

I'm pretty happy with both, but I've just found XP to be better for Wireless Networking and it's more plug + pray (especially for USB devices).

I preferred Longhorn but it's Microsoft's decision after all... If that product delivers what we're expecting, I don't care about its name... I just hope that it will be debugged before its release. There are a few modules that Microsoft supposedly decided to remove from Vista because of development issues. But this is not confirmed, there are too many stories about Longhorn on the Net and some fake screenshots too, so we have to wait to see the final product in 2006.

BTW, did you see the name announcement video? The crowd didn't seem to be impressed by the new name also!

My main OS is still Win2K, I'm only using WinXP to test the software I write. I want stability and security, am a bit worried that M$ won't properly support Win2K in the future. About the Vista name, I think they have shot themselves in the leg.

That's really a terribly unimaginative and bland name for something that's going to take over the world.

They could have made something up, or maybe even called it "Wista" after the venerable city in central Massachusetts that doesn't get a lot of attention.

Windows 2006 probably would've sounded better, especially along the line of previous versions of the OS that were named after years. If Longhorn (ahem Vista) came out in 2005, wouldn't it be called "Windows 2005 Special 20th Anniversary Edition?" (Windows 1.0 came out in 1985) Oh well, I guess only the server versions of Windows will be named after years...

Doing a 180 and going back to year number names would have been embarasing and confusing. They should instead have stuck to bi-letter names, and then it could be given mocking nicknawes, as long as they don't cheat by using an X. What the hell starts with that abomination of a letter?

I think a non-numeric name might be more appealing / less confusing for non-techies overall. Me, I could care less what it's called. I'll know what it is if someone asks. I think Average Joe computer user can remember "xp" or "vista" better than they can 95, 98, 98SE, 2000, etc.

Longhorn was a better name, but I want to make 2000 the last version of Windows I use. I think I was scarred for life after buying Me (helpful tip: you always know better than someone from PC World).

i know the lowest common denominator is pretty 'stupid', but i dont think *anyone* had any problems remembering 95 or 98.. it makes sense. i think calling it XP was a bad idea.. done to 'break away' from 9x but, now people will get more confused over the years i think with names that are in no way linked, as there is no obvious sucession like windows X.Y and 9x and 200x.

the only thing i dont like about the name, is it doesn't have an obvious short version, like xp/98/me/2k... win Vi? winVt?

I agree about the year names, those are pretty typical for a lot of games, and I don't think sports fans are exceptionally intelligent.

I think the discontinuity in naming conventions is there to give an illusion of finality.

Vista is really lacking IMO. Running XP Pro since it launched. Very stable and I like not having to add drivers all the time like in 2K. I've seen Longhorn running and don't care for it.

I'm afraid you'll just have to put my heretical opinions down to my amateur and junior status in the world of computing (and, yes, my XX chromosomes) Within reason, I always go for form over function (that is, I won't go for a duff product, but I would choose a second placed product over the top of the line if I preferred how it looked). Why shouldn't form be celebrated? Look at the success of Apple in recent years - much of it down to their gorgeous designs.

On the other hand, I have to admit that "pretty" is a very girly word! Perhaps "I'm looking forward to the enhanced graphical user interface that Longhorn promises" would fit the bill better?!.

No, it's not if eye candy matters, it's where eye candy matters. And usually, that's in games. Although in Linux, KDE and gnome are rather bloated with the visuals.

I have sympathy for your viewpoint, despite the fact that I appear to have that ol' Y chromosome. How the program looks is just as important as how it functions, because one has to look at the OS all of the time.

Back 20 years ago nothing on computer screens looked good and nothing looked bad. Nothing looked like anything.

I would have thought the government would put a stop to MS calling their new OS, Vista.
