They make noise, too.

Beware, the GeCube X700 PRO (512MB version) IS NOT passive... However, the GeCube SilenCool X800XL 512MB IS passive.

It's a good idea to look at both sides of a video card. For example, the Albatron PC6800 uses 2 heatpipes and a passive heatsink on one side, but "3" small fans on the other side.

A New List

Post by Caudipteryx zoui » Fri May 13, 2005 11:29 am

Hello. I'm been following the exploits of SPCR for almost a year now and have used what I've learned here to build the first iteration of my quiet pc. I'd like to give a little back to the community, so without furthur adieu I present the following:

UPDATES
:!::!: 06-13-05: This list is no longer being updated by me. Do not expect any updates via this post.:!::!:
05-17-05: Added [GIGABYTE GV-RX70P256V-SP], [GeCube GC-HP700PROG-C3], [GIGABYTE GV-RX70128D] to new category, Radeon X700! Added [GIGABYTE GV-NX66T128VP] to GeForce 6600. Added [GeCube GC-RX600XTGU-C3], [GeCube GC-HP800XL-E3] to Likely Candidates.

05-14-05: Added [XFX PVT43PUD] to GeForce 6600. Added [ATI RADEON X300SE (OEM)], [Best Data Diamond Stealth X300SE128WB] to Likely Candidates.

Fanless PCI-Express x16 Cards
  • All cards listed ship with no fans in their stock configuration.
All cards listed have been visually verified to have no fans anywhere on the card (esp. top, bottom, and in heatsinks). The source of this information is linked on the right.
Cards are divided by chipset then listed roughly in descending order of 3D performance.
OEM versions are not listed unless they have different features from Retail versions of otherwise similar cards.
If you wish to add to this list you must provide visual confirmation (either in-person, from a good friend, or a trusted retailer/manufacturer) that the card contains no fans (on any side) and prove that it can currently be purchased.

gigabyte 6600 gt card...

Post by scruzbeachbum » Mon May 16, 2005 3:18 pm

http://tw.giga-byte.com/VGA/Products/Pr ... T128VP.htm

should be added to the agp list. It's been reviewed on Tom's hardware
http://www1.graphics.tomshardware.com/g ... 00-34.html

and is available from multiple sources.
http://www.shopzilla.com/buy/noncat_pro ... =Calculate

It seems to be at a good price point for silent gaming.

Just a quick tip for everyone.

Buy from this list. SPCR gets money if you do.

The Express list has been updated again with 3 verified cards in a new category: the X700. Another 6600 and two Likely Candidates were also added.

One card I do know is Passive is the Nvidia TNT2-M64. :o

Note that this chipset is the same as the Geforce2  but it wasn't configured for gaming, instead it was marketed as a business graphics card with great 2d performance.

In Linux - GlxGears shows 312 fps for performance. Not bad on a card with only 32 megs and not geared for 3d performance. :P

As seen on this (http://www.komplett.se/k/ki.asp?sku=308137&cks=PRL) page there is a passive XFX 6600 card on sale. It goes under the name "XFX GeForce 6600 128MB Passive Cooling PCI-Express, Tv-Out/DVI, Retail". The name together with the part number PVT43PNDH7 is the only thing I have been able to find out about this card (some sources hints of dual dvi), it's not even present on the XFX webpage. I even tried calling komplett.se but the guy on the phone wasn't able to get me any other info. There is a 256 MB version as well.

Edit: I reread the last list on this page and saw that I missed a link to newegg with a passive cooled XFX 6600. However the part number doesn't match the 256 MB version at komplett. The newegg # is PVT43PUD and the komplett number is PVT43PUDH7. Can it still be the same card? Does anyone know if this is a good card?

I read over the thread and I did not see the GIGABYTE GV-N66256DP Geforce 6600 mentioned. I think the PCI-e version was mentioned, but this is an APG card.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814125189

It is not dual DVI.

Sorry if I missed mention of this card eariler in the thread.

Just FYI, Anandtech's coverage of the recent trade show in Taipei showed that Powercolor is going to release a passively-cooled X800XL.

Gigabyte's runs VERY hot. I am interested to know if Powercolor is able to get theirs to run a bit cooler.

Thank you for your efforts for the SPCR community, Caudipteryx zoui. I am sure all of the forum members will join me in applause.

The information in this thread is obviously best maintained in a WIKI. Unfortunately, this is going to be a bit delayed as we're trying to make choices on a new CMS for the site that will integrate well with out choice of WIKI. This also means much reconstruction of SPCR, so we are moving very cautiously.

Meanwhile, is there anyone else who could move forward with what Caudipteryx zoui has left us to keep this valuable list uptodate?

New Gigabyte passively cooled PCIe 6600GT: GV-NX66T256D.

Note that it features 2 x DVI (that's the reason I'm getting it instead of the 128Mb models - they are both VGA+DVI).

This looks like the perfect card for my new box.
Nice to have an alternative to the dual DVI XFX card (newegg) wich seems to cause trouble for some (it's been removed from XFXs product listing).

Here's an unusual pair: Matrox G550 PCIe and Matrox G550 Low Profile PCIe. Here's the non-low-profile one: http://www.matrox.com/mga/workstation/3 ... 0_pcie.cfm

Both are passive (using small heatsinks - classic northbridge size), both are dual DVI. Really interesting part is that they are both PCIe x1, instead of PCIe x16. Means that they will run in any PCIe slot (can plug them into a PCIex16 slot if you want to waste 15 of the 16 lanes).

The Matrox webpage does not say it explicitly, but I suspect you can run more than one of these at once. Given that a typical PCIe motherboard has a PCIex16 + 3 x PCIex1, you might be able to run four of them :) Anyone need 8 LCD panels on their system?

Note, for those unfamiliar with Matrox products, the G550 is not especially fast - will do fine for 2D (eg: Windows), but not for 3D games.

Very unusual indeed. Also practically useless, since the digital resolution is limited to 1280 x 1024 according to the page. :(

Noticed a new entrant at Newegg.

Sapphire Radeon X1300 256MB DDR PCIe

Just under $100. I'm tempted but I'd much rather buy a passive X1600.

The swedish price comparision site www.prisjakt.nu have a useful search function that includes passive or active cooling. There's also two subsections listing passively cooled cards.

The VGA-cards entry page:
http://www.prisjakt.nu/kategori.php?k=348
"Med passiv kylning" === "With passive coolning"

Passive AGP cards subsection:
http://www.prisjakt.nu/kategori.php?k=v432

Passive PCI-e cards subsection:
http://www.prisjakt.nu/kategori.php?k=v435

"Fler sökkriterier" =~ "More search options"
I think most options can be figured out without understanding swedish...

And I hope the links stay functional...

There's a Gigabyte 7600GT with Silent Pipe II just out, dual DVI output. This card is approximately 20%-30% faster than a 7600GS and priced approximately 30% more.

There is also a full range of silent cards from Asus, with nVidia 6600, 6600 overclocked, 7600GS, 7600GT, right up to the EN7800GT TOP reviewed here: http://www.trustedreviews.com/article.aspx?art=2419
(I think the 'TOP' means that it is overclocked).

I mailed Gigabyte about it. They told me those cards aren't for sale yet. They probably want their nvidia reference copies sold first.

My local PC shop informed me that the new improved MSI 7600GT will be out around mid May. My guess is that's when these passive versions (Gigabyte and Asus) will start to appear as well.

Rosewill Geforce FX5200 is Passive.

In regards to NewEgg: They finally started offering the search criteria of heatsink only. Note though that it's not perfect but does offer the best option for searching strictly passively cooled card as needed.

Which one of those two would be better? Are the passive 7600GTs the best passive nvidia cards?

www.newegg.com allows you to select VGA cards by various parameters including whether they are passive cooled. You can very quickly for instance find a list of dual DVI PCIe cards that are passively cooled; there were 4 when I just checked.
It’s a great resource for determining which products match particular criteria. Can anyone recommend something similar, especially if it’s a UK based retailer?

I'm also in the with a similar problem. I haven't found anywhere (big and hence cheap) that will let you select by heatsink type. However, as Dabs appear to like the category selection method, I've already emailed them about it, I suggest you do the same.

I think it's rather important that on the reccomended VGA list you make it obvious on the list how many slots the card occupies. I know the Gigabyte Silent Pipe II 7600 GT takes two slots, not sure how many others do. (My ancient GeForce 4 MX only takes one :-p)

This is farily important for anyone building a PC around a micro-ATX motherboard, (like an HTPC in the Antec NSK 2400), as you'll only be left with 2 spare expansion slots if you use a 2-slot card.

Even if Dabs offered this feature, I’d probably still use Newegg as a resource because they stock a lot more items than Dabs. Once I’ve decided what I want from Newegg, I would then use Froogle and other price searches for UK pricing and stock. Too many times the product isn’t yet available in the UK, which is a downside of this method.
