No, but I have a ZR2740W. This is completely silent at any brightness setting. I don't know if this applies to the 2440 as well though. A potentially important difference is that the ZR2740W does not use PWM to adjust the screen brightness - I don't know if the 2440 is the same, but it's apparently rare to find screens that don't use PWM (pulse width modulation is used to rapidly turn the backlight on/off which can result in audible noise).

I bought the 2740 because it doesn't use PWM to dim the backlight and I thought maybe this would eliminate annoying hum from the screen. Seems I was right, although it's also possible I just got lucky with mine - would be really interested to hear from other people with non-PWM screens.

The new Samsung series 9 (S27B970D) apparently doesn't use PWM either by the way (PWM is something tft central have started testing for as standard in their reviews, so if PWM results in a quiet screen that info could really help when shopping around - it's not something manufacturers list in their specs, but it can be tested for).

I ended up ditching my Dell 20" 2007FP's due to a constant high pitched whine I could never get rid of after slathering nail polish over most components on the inverter.

My Dell 3007WFP-HC is getting less use due to the CCFL inverter buzzing on acceptable brightness levels (mostly goes away at 100%).

I'm now on a Yamakasi Catleap 27" LED backlit monitor that only has a noticeable noise with white backgrounds. This one is supposedly an easy nail polish fix but I just haven't gotten around to opening it up yet. Benefits of this monitor, slightly higher PPI, no warmup time for accurate colours, almost dead silent, barely heats up the office.

Asus VW223D It has worked just fine for four year. Restarted my laptop, earlier today, to whom it was connected as external monitor for the same period of time. I kept everything on 24/7 , BUT as i said, i restarted laptop and ta dam! No image, only little blue diode on on/of button of monitor blipping and OF COURSE a very very silent whine from behind of the monitor. It is coming from behind near the upper edge and little bit on the right when you turn backside to the front. After little while even a little blue lamp stopped.

I think it's the end of it...

I can confirm the buzzing with the u2713hm. Otherwise it's a BRILLIANT monitor - no PWM backlight, tons of inputs, beautiful display, light AG coating, regular gamut.

<sigh>

I'm on my 3rd, and they all buzz.

I have a NEC Spectraview PA271W which has an annoyingly audible high pitched hum. My NEC2690 had a hum too, though not my NEC2490/2. I've been putting up with the hum because the display is wonderful to work with but it's beginning to get to me.

Does anyone know what causes the hum and whether anything can be done about it? Does anyone know of a colour accurate 27inch display that never hums?

Thanks.

Try changing brightness level. If that doesn't help, try changing contrast level next.

Thanks very much - that was the answer. When I increase the brightness to 120cd/m2 the buzz goes completely. Now I need to try different calibrations in small increments below 120 to see how close I can get to 80cd/m2 without the buzz becoming too intrusive. It's a bit bright at the moment. But it's great to have a solution. Thanks again.

PS - this 120cd/m2 is beginning to fry my eyeballs...

PPS - didn't last, hum's back even at 120cd/m2.

Fujitsu Siemens
Scaleoview L22W1GT or D22W1GT
Dropped the brightness to improve in game visuals, noticed whine.
Can hear whine between 8% and 93% increases toward the middle of the range so stuck with very dim or over bright.
Doesn't respond to changes in contrast or colour temperature.
Settled on Warm, Brightness 8%, Contrast 75%.

Thanks for this thread, will use it next time I'm looking for a screen!

AOC 12367f

Just took delivery of this today. Quiet on all brightness settings.

With my ear touching the screen (the top of my ear is in contact with the display, to be precise) there is a faint medium frequency hum. Inaudible at >5-10cm away.

Is this as good as it gets?

Samsung 2333HD

Audible hum at normal sitting distance at all brightness settings below 100%.

I've got a U2312HM (Rev. A06) as a replacement for my malfunctioning U2311H. As far as I can tell, it's silent. I'm using it a 7 brightness and haven't heard anything.

Either the A06 revision fixed the issue or it went away (factory menu shows 650 hours of use so mine is a refurb).

I was glad, if not surprised, to verify that the 27" BenQ GW2760HS is completely quiet at any brightness setting. Being a screen that actually does not use PWM for regulating the light I guess there should not be much risk of noise, but anyway it's indeed silent to my ears. The flicker free picture is pretty "quiet" too. It's a beauty in its price range.

Oh, and the fact that I listened for noise before checking for damaged pixels is telling of how far gone one might be in the quest for the quiet grail.

Its the same monitor as Asus VS24AH , only difference is the stand.

Dell U2414H:
No PWM and utterly silent. Just bought it, and as the TFT Central review stated it, it does not emit any sound at any brightness. (It is a relief after having a Samsung F2380 that was only quiet at 100%)

dell p2214h - silent!

had to drop in to post this :)

it turns out that this new pwm/flicker free backlighting thing may very well be our salvation.

Is it common for monitors to make occasional loud "pop" noises after/during use?

I've had this issue on most screens that I've had, and it flat-out prevents me from having a PC in the bedroom.

I notice sometimes a sudden creaking noise from some monitors. Not sure fi this is the same as what you hear but I believe it to be down to thermal expansion/contraction, hence you get it when you have the monitor on as it heats up and when it is off as it cools down.

Well done for keeping a computer out of the bedroom, even if just monitor noises are the problem. That's a really good lifestyle choice I think in stopping your house from looking like a server room.

Benq VW2245
Very very cheap 21.5' LCD display, Full HD.

I have 2 of them, no noise at all. Benq claims that it doesn't use PWM at all, but direct voltage/current regulation to dim the backlight. Tested at 0, 20, 50, 100% brightness settings. No flickering detected.
The external AC adapter doesn't buzz/whine.

Had this with an old CCFL monitor, a Fujitsu Siemens P19, it would creak for hours after turning off. I'm pretty sure it's because of the plastic rearranging itself as it cooled down. Also it whined terribly at brightness between 30% and 80%.

Both my Dell P2214H and P2414H are totally silent, as others have experienced. Can't hear anything with my ear right up to it at any brightness.

HP ZR2740w: Very slight whine in normal use, only noticable if I move around the back of the monitor within half a meter.

Samsung U32E850: No noise at all in normal use. If I press my ear right up against the vent behind the monitor I can faintly hear it buzzing. It makes a louder, but still very quiet whining when it's in standby mode, which pulses annoyingly in time with the blinking LED on the front.

I have both monitors set to 160cd/m² (about 30% brightness).

LG 34UC98-W: very limited whine: when you set it to standby, and the power led is blinking, you can hear a change in pitch. In normal operation, there is none, or at least I could not discern it. And I first thought the changing pitch came from somewhere outside, it is so faint.
(so about the same as Mr Evil had with the Samsung U32E850.)

LG 29UB68-P: Had this for a few weeks, absolutely no whine. Even in standby with blinking led.

Dell P2414H: Totally silent. I bought multiple displays, none of them exhibit any noise.

Recently upgraded to a BenQ GW2765HT. Also completely inaudible to me - can't hear a thing from it at any brightness setting.

Asus MG279Q
TFTCentral review
Totally silent in operation so far.

edit #2: turns out the popping noise was caused by "Render standby" being enabled in the BIOS. Disabling it got rid of it completely. IT is as if the iGPU would occasionally wake and ping the display, to which the electronics in the display would also wake for a fraction of a second, causing the speakers to pop.
