Gigabyte GeForce 9600GT 512MB - worth getting?

I know the Gigabyte GeForce 9600GT isn't a very new card but I simply don't have the funds available to me to upgrade to a decent card.

My current 8800gt is starting to give me slight problems and it's noisey! The 9600gt is 2nd hand and cheap and I like the idea of it not having any fans I also need a svideo out for my tv.

---edit---

Main use for the pc is browsing, lightroom, some photoshop, little cad and revit. Revit (and the latest PS CS6) make use of the GFX card, the rest don't really but I need a svideo as my TV doesn't have HDMI

According to your signature you currently have an 8800 GTS, so the 9600 GT should be a slight improvement performance-wise, though I don't think it will matter much at all.

It depends on how cheap the 9600GT is.

I spotted the box earlier and noticed it was a gts I had, goes to show how well I know my pc spec these days

It's advertised for 35euro, not that expensive really.

Unfortunately not. There are 2 versions of the 8800GTS but both are more powerful than the 9600GT. The 8800GT or 9800GT are performance wise identical and are as fast as the first version of the 8800GTS but not the second.

Still it's a reasonable enough card for silencing and after 5 years mine still copes with most things.

What problems is the 8800 giving you?

It's hard to get excited about a 6 year old card that will have similar performance to your existing one. Consider the GDDR5 version of the HD 6670 @ $50-70. There are fanless versions and I'm sure one will come with the DVI to S video adapter. Here's a comparison benchmark.

I haven't actually experienced it in the last week or so but while browsing (nothing heavy, even on facebook) screen would just go black and then into stand-by as if it were not getting a signal. I was getting some artefact also using revit. I've ran furmark for 10-15mins and temps stayed under 100 as the fan ramped up, not weird artefact either. I guess I liked the passive cooling of the 9600. Also, I wasn't aware of DVI to svideo adapters until the above post :D

Mines the 320mb model as far as I'm aware.

Sometimes artefacts show up in games when Furmark shows no problem. You say under 100C but how far under? Keeping things under 80C is better and I have seen artefacts as low as 85C. It'sd probably not a card worth spending money on now as aftermarket cooling solutions most likely won't fit and it's TDP is pretty massive.

In that case it's one of the earlier ones which is more or less the same performance wise as the 8800GT.

From memory, I as getting 92-96C while running furmark.

I got 2x4gig ram last week and I've not actually noticed any problems since :?

I think I'll just hold of with buying a card for the moment until I can afford a better one or really need one.
