GTX 760 review compilation

Post by CA_Steve » Tue Jun 25, 2013 8:11 am

In brief: high end 1080p / low to mid 1440p card, 170W TDP. Requires two PCIe Graphics power connectors. Some designs use one 6-pin and one 8-pin, some use two 6-pin. Fits in-between the GTX 660 Ti and GTX 670. $250-260 intro price.

Dissappointing in terms of performance per Watt. Here's a nice interpretation of power efficiency with other cards and this shows it as less efficient than any 600 series card:
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/ASUS ... OC/28.html

Does it mean that for once a new generation has become less efficient than the outgoing generation? No because they're basically the same generation, just rejigged for different price points.

performance per watt: Yep, it's worse. I think it's mostly due to the top end speed/voltage bin. To go from 1124MHz to 1150MHz, the core voltage for the Asus board is raised from ~1.162V to 1.182V. So, to get a 2.3% bump in performance it takes almost a 6% increase in power. If you stay at the 1124MHz bin, then you get roughly the same power used as the GTX 670 with maybe 94% of the performance @ 1080p. :) Note the MSI card makes a better showing within 1% of the 660Ti and 3% of the GTX 670 @ 1080p with oddly higher core voltages.

That said, in terms of performance per dollar, it's a healthy bump over both the 660Ti and the 670.

The MSI 760 seems somewhat interesting, if not from a perfomance/watt perspective, at least as an overall package of price, performance and noise.

The big question I would like to know the answer for, is what the fan speed % is on the card. As in, could the fan speed be lowered even more with Afterburner for example.
The temps already seem fairly good.

Yeah, it looks pretty. The Tom's Hardware review shows MSI's fan going from 9xx rpm idle to ~1200 rpm load. So, there's some potential for improvement with a tweak.

If the techpowerup review is accurate... MSI seems like the winner. It seems very similar to GTX780 custom editions, Asus kinda focusing on lower temps while higher noise, and MSI is focusing more into lower noise and still great cooling.

another review that puts msi as the best, very low db on load, and it even turns off the fans at idle... Damn if I was into mid end gpu this would be my pick.

Really hoping spcr gets one os th msi gtx 760 gaming to see if it real what other sites are posting.

Thanks for the link, it seems to go in line with other reviews,
The best we liked the MSI GeForce GTX 760 TwinFrozr gaming. The menu offers a good speed increase over the reference design, while ensuring to summon the quietest cooler under our test candidates. The noise level in Windows could indeed be just a tad bit better, but does not interfere. Under load, the card remains by far the quietest - and achieved good results. For about 235 euros , the buyer receives a thoroughly enjoyable product that also comes up with an acceptable power consumption.
Really wished SPCR would get some of the MSI cards, N760/N770/N780 to see how they really measure on their chamber.

Last time I heard, MSI wasn't offering SPCR review samples. Alas and alak. Go find a marketing rep and pester him for Mike :)

Well, too bad for them. Given its level and direction of focus, SPCR may be a slightly niche review site, both for users and manufacturers, but a trusted company with a good, proven product can only benefit.
As for me, I don't really trust other sites on noise issues. I'd rather trust most users here than a reviewer claiming this "less silent" fan really pushes 31.472 CFM at a modest 1600 RPM while producing just 19.34 dB. Heck, I'd even prefer if they just posted RPM readings for VGAs - a much easier test to do, not to mention trustworthiness.
Concerning power - well, TPU is just fine, no problems there :) XbitLabs are great at that, too.

MSI - why you no use real black PCBs? Chocolate PCBs are evil.

I'll chime in and repeat that the MSI custom cooled card seems to be much more quiet than the rest. I know someone who is in the market for an Nvidia card. I was going to recommend the EVGA custom but I told him to get the MSI.

Did you exclude HT4U for some reason? Or have I just missed the relevant quote?

I like HT4U. But, all they've shown is the Nvidia version of the card. When they publish a review for a card we can buy, I'll post it. :)

An interesting new GTX760 has been introduced by MSI, to compete with Asus similar short styled card, the interesting thing about it is they manage to do it more quiet than Asus, i'll leave you some links of the the three reviews from same website so it can be seen as apples to apples,

TechPowerUp MSI GTX 760 Mini-ITX Gaming 2 GB
TechPowerUP MSI GTX 760 TwinFrozr Gaming 2 GB
TechPowerUp ASUS GTX 760 DirectCU Mini 2 GB

Doing some crappy paint job, here are is a compare between the 3 reviews above,

Image

That said, the asus do run cooler at load, 75C vs 83C, but at the expense of 6db, personally i prefer to take the heat and end up with a viable small card for a small htpc, etc.

Added. Bottom line - single fan cooler is hard pressed to handle 170W TDP.
