New cards for the quiet gamer (R9 285 Strix - GTX 970 Strix)

They make noise, too.

New cards for the quiet gamer (R9 285 Strix - GTX 970 Strix)

From the german site ComputerBase (AFAIK affiliated with the PCGH magazine), a fresh review about the latest ASUS Strix iteration, the R9 285 (a brand new GPU, less hot and faster than usual Radeons).

Impressive card, how much does it cost? For now there's no reason for me to upgrade from my 280x with an artic accelero extreme performance or noise wise. However this could be an excellent option for new builders who are looking for an out of the box quiet and powerful card.

Here it is in action

It's nice to see the STRIX line expand. I predict this card will get hammered in fps/Watt in the next few months when more Nvidia Maxwell cards arrive.

I think maxwell is a great design from nvidia, but we havent seen yet how its implemented on their higher end, which should come very soon with the GTX980/970, but i also have my doubts into how log will this gen last, seems this maxwell will still be 28nm, with the delays of the next die shrink.... but what worries is me is for how long, will we the next cards in less than year.... not sure what to do atm, i guess wil see a decent bump in speeds, im expecting 20-30% on the next gen, but some poeple are suggesting much more for the die shrink....

There's an Nvidia event later this month...and that'll be the 970/980 release. Still at 28nm, but remember what we saw with the Maxwell 750/750 Ti. Figure 20nm versions will hit 1st Q 2015. I don't think there will be a 28nm 760 version...but that's a guess.

This is what worries me, GPU that rule for 6 months.... and specially if we consider that custom cooler like MSI Twin Frozr, Asus Strix, Gigabyte windforce styled cooled cards come like a month or two after. I really want to jump into a sli setup and get a 4k monitor, but i fear this new gpus wont last long, thats if the new arch does offer significant changes....

More to come: ASUS Strix GTX-970 is next to launch. Noteworthy it should be based upon the Maxwell GM204 GPU.

I don't think we can expect any 20nm GPU's for this upcoming generation... earliest will be Q4 2015, and TSMC's 16nm will probably be ready

TSMC is shipping volume 20nm product now, it's called the Apple A8 in the iPhone 6. So, it's still likely to see 20nm Nvidia GPUs in early 2015.

Hope Nvidia manages to net more video power out of them, the GTX980 rummors place it very similar to the GTX780ti, just more power efficient.... and while this is good news for most of us, as it should be easier to cool, specially needed less rpms on the fans.... not good enough power in a SLI to drive 4k.

I think it'll be a couple of lithography shrinks and a lot more processing power per watt before I'm willing to consider 4k. Actually, I think it may require my two 24" 1080p monitors to die before I go 4k :)

Techpowerup claims the GTX 960 will intro in mid/late October. This is the one to watch for 1080p.

(GTX 970/980 on Sept 19).
