Just wanted to let other users know that I got the gigabyte r9 270 and the fan can be turned off at idle using the supplied fan control software. In my system there's not quite enough airflow so I have them running between 5 and 10%. Though it might be useful info to put out there...

If the fan is set to run slow at idle, will it ramp up under load or is it stuck at that speed? Is the fan control software part of the AMD Catalyst package, or something unique to Gigabyte?

You set a custom fan speed curve with the Gigabyte OC guru software - there's no lower limit on the speed though so you can spin down to nothing.
