Apparently ASUS have announced a semi-passive GTX780 (http://www.techpowerup.com/201067/asus- ... -card.html) and R9 280 (http://www.techpowerup.com/201077/asus- ... -card.html) which might be of interest to some.

Hopefully, they'll apply that fan control downward in their product line.

Review at Guru3d, it's passive in idle (nice!), but IMO not SPCR-quiet under load, and the VRMs get too hot:
