For comparison, a new MSI GTX 960 Gaming 2GB is £160. I'm seeing used ones on eBay for $160 in US. Depending on your monitor resolution and games played, this might be the better alternative - way lower power use.

GTX 960 looks like it might be a good option. They are £110-140.00. eBay is usually about 20 above local forum prices.

It appears the 960 is a little better than 680 but much lower wattage. 120w versus 195w is a big difference

Thanks for the input!

Thank you for this (old) thread.

I still have my Asus GTX 690 which is a pair of 2 680's on one board. At idle the fans won't go below 30% so I am looking to do the 0% mod. They run vapor chambers so it wouldn't be a problem.

The problem is it may not work.

At the moment I am using HD3000 graphics... not good at all but completely silent which is bliss!

I have an almost similar experience "as quest_for_silence"/Luca

I have just tried with a GTX650-DC-1GD5 but didn't succeeded

So like Luca - I could write:
I didn't run into any problem while modding and flashing the BIOS, but the new modded BIOS has no effect on actual min fan speed.
With the stock BIOS, the min fan speed is 10%. With the modded BIOS, the min fan speed can even be lowered to 0%, but nonetheless the fans will still spin (so no real change).

Have any find out what next to do (since this tread is rather old) :)
