I fear that they are flawed :(

I fear that they are not flawed :)

I fear that fear is flawed and things are flawed. Why is stuff so confusing? Also, that 224 watt reading on the MSI just seems kinda nuts.

Jefe, 224W is with FurMark AFAIK, so it doesn't matter that much.

About what's flawed, Guru3D's figures are calculated, not measured, so more likely they may contain some hidden error.

BTW, their Gaming X's findings are IDENTICAL to their PowerColor's ones:

Reviews with acoustic testing:

MSI RX 480 Gaming X 8GB (11.02" length, 5.51" height, dual slot (1.60"), 8-pin PEG. 2 DP, 2 HDMI, 1 Dual-link DVI). Passive to 60C.

SPCR to me are the only real reviews, specially for us silent seekers, but for preformance, Guru3d, TechPowerUp and [H]ardOCP to me are the top reviewers, and recently i enjoyed Nexus Gamer a lot, as he explains a lot more, btw in case you are interested he just release the msi review,

Gamers Nexus MSI RX 480 Gaming X Review & Benchmark also he released the Video.

Checking in because I just got MSI RX 480 Gaming X 8GB a few days ago. I'm very very impressed. I haven't done full on furmark stress testing, but I dabble in coin mining which is pretty stressful on a card, and while mining Ethereum at ambient 70F the card settles at 72C core, VRMs about the same temperatures and the fans spin at or below 950RPMs making MSI card pretty much inaudible even under load while still maintaining decent temperatures. When I had R9 290 the only way I could achieve the same level of quiet was to put it under DIY water mod, but that meant having huge radiator in my case, having some pump noise, and it was still a bit louder than RX480.

Getting the MSI RX 480 I fully expected to have to do something to make it quiet, but this might be the first card since ECS 8800GT 512MB (which had Accelero S1 installed from the factory) where I just might leave the stock cooling on because it is so good.

This is agree, i also had a Prolimatech MK26 to be used on my MSI GTX1080, but the twinfrozr cooler proved to be really good that i didnt bother.... maybe next gen.

FYI got a chance to play with PowerColor Red Devil 8GB and PowerColor Red Dragon 4GB, they're definitely not as good as MSI. PowerColor cards default to keeping the card at 80C, while MSI defaults to 72C. At their respective default settings I would say all three cards are practically silent however if I set the temp target to 72C on PowerColor it becomes noticeably louder than MSI. Plus the PowerColor fans have harsh, scratchy tone to them as well. MSI cooler is the clear winner here. I would definitely recommend MSI over PowerColor if you can afford $10-30 extra.

Also got a chance to play with Asus Strix RX480. I didn't put it through a thorough testing, but my overall impression is that stock cooling is still louder than MSI RX480.

That said, the cool thing about Asus Strix RX480 is that it has extra two 4-pin outs right on the video card PCB. The idea is that you could connect case fans to your videocard and let the videocard control them. This does make a lot of sense for PC Gamers since they only stress their computers when playing games. However, if you look at Strix reviews, the heatsink is perfect for mounting two 120mm fans instead of the default 3 fan solution. And you can connect those 120mm fans directly to the video card PCB, which is what I did. I strapped two 800RPM scythe fans to the Asus Strix and connected them directly to the video card fan headers. You won't get RPM reading in the MSI Afterburner, but it works otherwise. I didn't run any synthetic benchmarks but at 70F ambient temperature in my un-scientific testing the card stayed at 70C or below and never throttled itself. The MSI afterburner said the fans were running as high as 100%, but I don't know if those 100% were applied to the two fan headers that my fans were connected to. It remains to be seen how well this solution will work in the summer heat when ambient temps are higher, but given what I've seen I'm confident two 1000RPM 120mm fans should do the job.

Bottom line, MSI RX480 is still the winner since stock heatsink is quieter than Asus, and Asus is typically more expensive, but Asus can be a viable choice depending on your needs and budget.

Turns out my Asus Strix sample has a pretty nasty coil whine. As with all coil whine it only happens in specific situations, in my case it happens when I play L4D, but when it happens it's pretty loud - I can hear it outside the case. I did not notice this problem with MSI card so I'll have to reaffirm recommendation for MSI card over ASUS.

EDIT: put the MSI card through the same test and it also has some coil whine, although it's a tad quieter than Asus which is probably why I didn't notice it the first time. So MSI card also has coil whine, but less so than ASUS. MSI card still a winner over ASUS IMO though.
