8k displays are shipping and you can buy one
You make it sound like they hit retail, they are barely avialable and cost a ton of money.
is the improvement over 4k worth it for average uses?
Resolution is only one aspect of screens, there are a ton other things that matter depending on what you will be doing with them, like color accuracy, response time, viewing angles, and more important viewing distance.
and how about windows 10 issues and re-sizing programs that were originally made for vga, like office 2003, which is what i prefer using
To me windows scaling is usable but not really well done, to me its so bad that i use 4k natively on 32'', needs some time to get use to but in time you do, probably its more a question into if you like it or not. Now about 8k.... for me it wont happen until windows can scale properly, to go into 8k and use it natively i would need a 60''+ screen and that way to big for me to keep track. Now if you windows 11 does a good job on scaling i might consider it.
One of the most important things you need to understand is that the human eye has limitations into the viewing distance, for a resolution/screensize to show any improvement a minimum distance should be reached, if you dont, then lower resolutions would be equally as good as your eye wont be able to tell the difference, for example in my personal case, using a
Home Theater Viewing distance calculator
Screen size: 32'' (recommended minimum distance)
For 480p (720×480) resolution, you must sit: 9'
For 720p (1280×720) resolution, you must sit: 6'
For 1080p (1920×1080) resolution, you must sit: 4'
For 4k (3840×2160) resolution, you must sit: 2'
For 8k (7680×4320) resolution, you must sit: 1'
So in my personal case, i usually sit 2 feet or so, so 4k is ideal on 32'', but going into 8k on the same size, i would need to get closer and thats not comfortable for me on my desk, and going bigger would require to much neck movement, although here it can work out if you display most things on the center, but overall for me 32 and 4k is a good match, imo am at the sweetspot. What im looking is faster response time, in time, not something that drives me crazy, nor there are gpus that can drive 4k120.
This is also the main reason im not looking forward for 8k TVs, usually people hang 10+ feet from the TV, so you will need a very big screen to make worth it, to me 1080p is what most should have, but i can see 4k working better for very few depending on the screen size and viewing distance, now 8k.... you going to need 150''+ screens to make it worth it.
