Radeon 8500 cooling

Post by mrzed » Wed Dec 03, 2003 3:16 pm

I am passifying my 8500le. I ebayed a large heatsink to replace the stock whiny 40mm HSF. Thing is, there is a raised ridge along the centre of the new HS. The result is that it covers only about 95% of the GPU core. There is a strip along either edge of a little less than 1mm where there is no contact.

Other than this, I am positive the new HS is more than up to the job. Should I be concerned about this lack of coverage? I have heard that with GPU's the centre of the die is where things get the hottest.

Edit: Now academic. I got impatient, and I'll find out soon enough. It is blissful now that I finally banished the stock fan. Now - on to cutting out the fan grilles and modding the PSU!
