I was thinking about mounting (at least trying to mount) a GC68 witha 24v m1a at 12v to cool it rather quietly.
I was thinking it may be a bit too heavy.
would a stock barton 2500+ Hs be enough to run passive? What about a stock tbred b 1800+ hs be enough? (passive of course.
Sticking a GC68 on my 8500le?

You don't need anything like that much cooling for an 8500. I cooled mine by pulling off the stock fan, leaving the heatsink and using a 5V L1A on a Zalman bracket above the card. I ran it like that for a year with no trouble. I think several others here at SPCR have done the same thing. Use the search.
Another easy option is to use one of those Zalman ZM-17 passive vidcard heatsinks. That plus an L1A on a Zalman bracket would be excellent. Recently there was a thread about this heatsink. The guy was experimenting with spreading the fins open into the configuration of a Zalman Flower. Look for that thread.

I just passified my 8500le with a HS I ebayed. I was thinking of throwing a fan on it, but it seems not to need it at all.
Sorry, no pics, but the HS I used was about 75*75*30mm tall. I had to cut it down a bit to clear the big caps. I would think a stock CPU HS of recent vintage should be fine passive, assuming decent case airflow. Weight is really only issue if you move your computer often.
