Silent CPU fan for Shuttle SN41G2

Post by cacamonsta » Thu Feb 05, 2004 3:57 pm

Hi,
Im new to this forum and need some advice on silent cpu fans. I just received a Shuttle SN41G2 (SFF) by happily trading a few webcameras from my workplace (Logitech). Any recommendations for a silent cpu fan that will fit into the Shuttle SFF for under $25?

Welcome to SPCR!

That Shuttle uses the ICE heatpipe/hetasink they introduced some time back. I believe the integrated fan is a 80mm, which is good, but instead of the standard 25mm thickness, it is slimmer-- maybe 20 or 15mm. You could pop a standard Panaflo 80L1A on it, but the mounting housing has to be modded a bit; have to do something with the 4 tabs that take the screws in the fan corners.

I suspect the bigger issue will be the teenie fan in the PSU that's been noted by many as being whiny & very tough to silence.

I have just received a new sample PSU from Shuttle that could well be the answer to the SFF silencer's prayers: A FlexATX form factor variant, the Shuttle "SilentX PC40" or PC40N250EV is rated to deliver 250W, and "32 dB at full load". I can't verify this claim yet (I presume dBA/1m) but I can say it is really amazingly quiet at idle, esp. considering what their other 40mm fan PSUs have sounded like in the past. It uses two 40mm fans, one at either end in push-pull mode.

Good news about the 250w psu for the Shuttles.

All the G series boxes, afaik, take 80x25 cpu fans. Have a panaflo 80mm mbx in my sn45g - same box as an sn41g2.

You'll never find a 'silent' fan for your PSU ;)

But there are plenty of fans out there - we use the Adda 0412MS-G70 fan 20dba & 5.7cfm. Mines been working hard in my SS51G for over 14 months now.
I have a Noiseblocker S4 in the rear, with Smartfan running. Much quieter than stock. I've then modded the Radeon 9700Pro fan to run @ 7volts.

When Smartfans on low, it's whisper quiet - but not silent!

;)
