I'm considering one of these Synology DS212J NAS systems.
Probably cheaper and more compact than building my own NAS box, plus supposedly the Synology software is really good, but not sure how cool/quiet these are.

I own the same one and it sits across the room in an open cabinet under the TV. I can hear it if everything else is off, including the ceiling fan, the windows are closed, and I focus. It really is quiet enough unless you plan to put it on your desk. Mine has been running for nearly 3 years now non-stop and I think the fan is starting to go. It does seem to have a bit more of a noise than before. I plan to replace the fan with a Noctua. Temperatures according to S.M.A.R.T. are well within spec so no worries there.

However, the 212J is discontinued I believe. Unless you are getting it super cheap on a closeout, you might as well jump up to the 214 series. Faster processor, more memory, better performance. It depends on what you plan to do with it I suppose. Mine is basically a music server, time machine backup, and photo archive. It works fabulously as such. :)

OP posted over a year ago. I'm sure he's probably made his decision long ago. :)
