Is the Shuttle G4 quiet?

Post by roaf85 » Mon Jan 26, 2004 6:26 pm

You people metion that 47 db is not quite and I admit it isnt but I tried measuring my Gamecube from 12 inches away and got a reading of around 48 db. I was wondering if a shuttle pc is only as loud as a gamecube or ps2 what is chances of hearing it from like 8 feet away from the tv? Or am I misinformed? I have also looked at the Aopen mini itx. What would you people rather go with?

I'm curious as to why you're primarily interested in a G4. Also, AMD or Intel G4?

www.excaliberpc.com for Aopen xc. There's a lot of shuttle owners at www.sudhian.com.

why is there something better than the g4? Shuttle still builds some pretty good SFF PC.

No. Why a G4 instead of a G or G2.

G4 uses a newer low-noise PSU

However, the new Shuttle Zen ST62K (smaller, ATI graphics, no SATA, no AGP???) is even more quieter, thanks to an external fanless PSU.

The g4's are substantially more $ than the g or g2 and they have that goofy flash card thing on the front, which cloggs up the 3 1/2" bay. Not sure about how quiet the new 250w psu is (it has 2 40mm fans instead of 1,) but, the review indicates that it's more quiet than the 200w psu's. If true, it's a step in the right direction.

The new K models are nice looking, but with no agp, no sata, as you said, and no dvi output it would seem that it's intended for low-end use.

Personally I'd go for a Soltek SFF, seems like quite good solutions and have 2x5.25 bays. The Alu front looks better than the plastic mirror front though.

Also available for Athlon XP.

I'd probably go for the Solotek too mainly because it looks like it uses a standard mATX PSU, in which case it would be replacable with something quieter as well as the additional cooling vent.
