Wooden HD box with paraffin wax?

Post by maxxymus » Mon Sep 20, 2004 1:51 pm

Hey guys,

Was thinking of making a wooden box for HD's (gotta silence that friggin raptor!).

I was thinking of melting down some candles and coating the box in some wax, 1-2 coats.

Do you think that the wax would melt due to HD temps? Will this have any impact on the high pitch whine that the HD makes? I dont want to waste any money and basically all the wood/candles are from home.

Not looking to buy any acoustic foam. I do have some tuff bubble wrap as well that I can use.

Cheers

most paraffin melts at around 50-65C, so if the box is completely sealed it'd probably melt, but the drive would be in trouble anyways.

if it's just about the cost, try carpet padding/underlay, will cost like $2-5/square yard... i think the wood alone will absorb more sound than wax will, the bubble wrap might be worth a shot though.
