How about this rig? A64 winnie etc

Post by El_Duderino » Thu Jan 27, 2005 8:53 am

Ok, how does this sound? I'm not looking for silent, just dang quiet... :-)

A64 winchester 2800/3000+ with a thermalright xp120
Silverstone fanless PSU
Gigabyte fanless fx6800
Samsung spinpoint 160/200 Gb
As for MB, I was thinking along the lines of an Abit AV8.

At this point, I have four undervolted and quiet 80 mm fans (one goes on the CPU, one is intake onto the gfx card (just to play it safe), one is intake at the bottom of the case where the HD will be and one is exhaust right next to the CPU.

Would this setup be ok if I got another 120 mm to undervolt and make a PSU duct?

(Needless to say, I would suspend the Samsung.)

Thanks for any input!

How about two 120mm fans?

Hello:

Overall it sounds great! BTW, you'll have a 3000+ and I don't believe they *make* a 2800+ Winchester.

I would go with one Nexus/Yate Loon 120mm exhaust and one on the XP120. The blow-by from the CPU and the case air flow should work on the GPU. Another option is to use the Aerocool VM-101 passive cooler on a similar video card, or the Zalman VF700-Cu.

And if you get a case with good air flow where you can manage things, that also is key.

Thanks... I don't think Nexus/Yate Loon are available where I live - would Papst 4412FGL be OK? I havent seen a good review on it anywhere...

Sounds good but you will need a good case to get the hot air away from that passive 6800 and passive psu

I want to do exatly the same thing but am unsure whether it would be stable and what kinda temps it would get to after 4 hours of gaming in hot weather

a very important consideration is what case you will be using. Most of the people here reccomend the Antec 3000BQE. As for the motherboard, as I've said a whole bunch already, look for a passive Northbridge cooler.

I'm using a Chieftec midtower, and I was thinking I would be ok with two intake fans (80 mm) and two semi-out fans (120mm + 80mm, with the 120 mm being in a PSU duct)). There would also be another 120 mm on the CPU.

My other option is to ditch my current setup entirely and just get another case and 4-5 new Papst 120 mm fans. I can get them at a fairly reasonable price. Hmm... Uh.... The pressure... Somebody, walk on my back... :-)

It doesn't sound like heat will be a terrible problem with your setup, just remember a few things. The general concept of fans is cool air in, hot air out. You don't need 4, 5, 12 fans to keep your case cool. 2 case fans can keep it cool, as long as they're efficiently placed. A single 120mm exhaust fan should be more than enough, but if possible I'd squeeze in another 120mm intake fan. The midtower you're using can most likely be adapted to be quiet as long as you can use 120mm fans.

And yeah, quiet isn't cheap, but silence is golden, and gold is worth a lot!
