Looks good, but I would go with a more modern PSU and also a WD Green or Red instead of a Blue.

The Blue version I've select is WD10EZEX Its specs are: SATA 6 Gb/s, 7200RPM and 64 MB cache.
The only difference with Red and Green is the intellipower => which influence the spin up and spin down during usage.

I realize that the S12II is an old model however it seemed of good quality.
Digging further showed that I could have saved 10$/20$ choosing a different PSU around 500W

BTW I decided to go for the i5-4570

For storage a 5400RPM drive might be more suitable.

Do you need 500W? A modern unit like the Seasonic G-360 would be a lot more efficient.

From a noise percpective, I would agree.
From a price percpective, the cheapest WD with 1Tb is a Blue 7200rpm; 5400 were as cheap or more expensive than WD10EZEX

G360 (80+Gold) instead of S12II (80+Bronze) is probably too short from a power percpective.
But I recon a G-450 could have been a good choice too.

For reference, efficiency level when load is 20% 50% and 100%:
Bronze: 81% 85% 81%
Gold : 88% 92% 88%

Price were different though : S12II 520W : +-70€; G-450 = +-90€

Check CA_Steve build = 318W stress test (Prime95 + Furmark), this is with a less efficient GPU, your shouldnt ever get close to 300W, and this is furmark + prime95, scenarios that are extremely unlikely to ever happen, you should be looking like 200W on load or so. Also check Vicotnik signature, he is running a similar build as yours, except from the mechanical hdd, but he is fine with G360, so i would take his advise. But if it gives you piece of mind having 450W, go for it.

Thanks for your view on this. I read the SPCR full test for G-360 ... (http://www.silentpcreview.com/article1297-page5.html)

(showing signature was off in my profile. I enabled them for the reading.
Interesting to see that a G360 can hold Vicotnik's config.

G360 is +-60€ while the S12II I bought is +-70€

Damned, price wise: G-360 < S12II 520w < G-450

The more I read the more I feel S12II wasn't the good choice. I might explore the return policy of Amazon and get the G-360 or G-450 instead.

All three of these power supplies are fitted with the same fan, an Adda ball bearing unit with a top speed of around 2000 rpm. Seasonic tend to use a fairly aggressive profile with this fan, particularly with the smaller capacity units. So it is important that system power consumption does not exceed 50% or so of the PSU's nominal capacity if fan noise is an issue. To illustrate this point this is the fan profile for the G-360 from the X-bit labs G-360 and G-550 review:

Image

Haswell systems have been reported as drawing around 190/200w even when the 750 TI is overclocked and overvolted. So the G-360 should be OK, just. But system power draw is not the only factor is how hot a PSU runs. The fan control is temperature based not load based. So higher ambient temperatures, both in terms of weather and the room the machine it is in could lead to a G-360 just going over into that zone where the fan speed ramps up sharply. The best way of avoid this possibility is to use a higher capacity PSU, say in the 500 to 550w range. The G-550 would certainly be better than the S12II in terms of fan noise, the S12II units were fitted with varying profiles depending on the capacity but tended to ramp up speeds at lower settings than a G series. I cannot find a profile for the S12II 500 but this is the one for the 520w, again from X-bit Labs:

Image

If you compare this with the fan profile of the G-550 there is an improvement, reflecting Gold efficiency and later technology. Whether the difference is worth the additional cost over the S12II 500 is another question if you are not going to stress the unit beyond around 200w.

Thanks lodestar for these graph and extra info.

I decided to go for a G-360 based on all the feedback received, reading suggestion and personal findings/readings

Assembling all the parts together and booting up the new system shall be end of this week if the PSU is delivered on-time :-)
