New Gaming Build

Post by yan9 » Tue Nov 08, 2016 7:27 am

I am about to start a new gaming build with a Lian LI PC V33B case mainly because of its size and where I am fitting it.
I will also be using it for some home photography and video editing etc.

This is the link for previous help with the case viewtopic.php?f=15&t=69354

At present I will be gaming at 1080p but may decide for a better monitor and will also connect to my 1080p plasma screen at certain times.
Games I am a little uncertain of as I am trying to keep up with my grandson and who knows what he will choose next. At present it is Arc Dinosaur Survival
and Witcher lll I believe, plus a few war games. I would just like something reasonally powerful, and as future proof as possible, I realise that I cannot look to far ahead.
I also realise that this build will not be quiet when gaming but hopefully not to bad when at idle.

The components that I have chosen are as follows, but not necessarily from these suppliers.

Not sure on the power supply

Advice on these two fans or recommendation of others in case any fans need replacing or adding to.

Personally I swear by SeaSonic's PSUs, their X650 and Platinum 1050 fans never spun up except on really hot summer days or during heavy loads.

Their Prime series (titanium efficiency) is supposed to have even better heat tolerance.

As for future-proofing the graphics card, I'm waiting for the Nvidia 1080 ti model to come out next year. It will be even more powerful than the current 1080s.

And I had good experiences with both Scythe and Noctua fans. Scythes have become difficult to find on this side of the pond, but you get what you pay for when you buy Noctuas; They come with rubber dampening on the corners and rubber mounts as well.

CPU: I'd lean toward the i5-6600(K) rather than i7 for gaming. Don't think that's going to change for the next few years. There is potential benefit of the i7 if you do a LOT of video editing...but you may benefit more from GPU acceleration than CPU hyperthreading.

cooler: Ninja 4 is great. If going with i5, you can drop to the Kotetsu.

mobo: Are there features on the Maximus mobo that you need? Otherwise, you can save money and go with Z170 Pro Gaming.

RAM: 2 x 8GB is useful for large photo batches and video editing. DDR4 3000 is a potential benefit if you go with the very fastest SSD AND i7 AND highest end GPU AND do very very intensive computing. Otherwise, it's overkill. For you, it's overkill. Look for the knee in the pricing curve and go with that...probably DDR4 2666ish. (haven't stared at RAM pricing recently).

SSD: I like the 850 Evo.

Gfx: For 1080p, the GTX 1060 is great. If you were planning to get a 1440p monitor, or want to run games at lower quality levels at 2160p, then the GTX 1070 is a good choice. So, if you aren't planning to upgrade the monitor resolution for a couple of years, get the cheaper card now and replace when you get the better monitor. Probably a wash in costs in the long run and you get the newest gfx features. The MSI Gaming 1060 is ~ £286 vs £489 for the 1070.

PSU: The Leadex Platinum and P2 are (I believe) the same platform. A heavy gaming load (assuming i7 and GTX 1070) is around 265W. So, 550W is fine.

Hi Fire-Flare and CA_Steve thank you both for your replies.

Regarding the cpu and the video editing I have started to do more editing lately with my grandson now heavily in to motorcycle trials riding so think that I will go with the i7 cpu and the Ninja 4.

GPU I am having difficulty choosing between the 1080 and 1070 at present and understand it may be wiser to wait for the 1080 ti.

I chose the motherboard for Bluetooth and Wifi but also for looks and the possibility of a little bling. I did find the motherboard choice extremely hard and did a lot of comparisons and finally decided that oh well if I could afford it I couldn't go to far wrong.

Ram I was thinking Corsair DDR 4 3000 vengeance but still unsure if this is recommended for the board.

I will check out the two power supplies and pick the cheapest if they are both the same.

Fan wise I will see what the case fans are like then may go for the Noctua ones if I need to change or add extra to the case.

Thanks again for your advice, I will browse your mails again just to get my head around it all before finally deciding cheers.
