2016 Refresh (Gaming, General)

Post by The Black Cursor » Wed Dec 14, 2016 10:39 am

Greetings all,

It's been several years since my last build so I feel it's time for a refresh. For casual gaming (strategy, MMO, etc.) as well as general computing, how does this look?

No need to comment on anything below the power supply ^_^

Unless there's a specific feature you need on the -AR mobo, I'd lean toward the Pro Gaming SKU for the better audio chain.

The Corsair Vengeance LPX has lower profile, lower CAS and is cheaper.

Steve,

Thanks for the comments. I thought of the -AR as I did not need the DVI/VGA ports of the -A recommended in the 4K Gaming article; I will look at the Pro Gaming. For memory, I've always stuck with Crucial and Kingston but I'll look at that Corsair kit as well.

Well, the MSI card is out of stock everywhere, so how about this instead?

MSI Radeon RX 480 8GB GAMING X

How does it compare power-, heat- and noise-wise to the MSI GeForce GTX 1060 6GB 6GB GAMING X?

slightly slower, somewhat similar in noise profile with the edge going to the 1060, uses more power.
