Silent NAS [4+ bay]

Post by justice99 » Wed Mar 29, 2017 7:22 am

Hello guys,

I have decided to move all my HDD into a NAS (Windows Server 2016). I currently have:

2 x Seagate st8000vn0022 Iron Wolf 8TB
2 x WD RED 4TB

I don't use RAID (I prefer external backup that I do regularly).
I was planning to buy a 4 bay Synology but 450€ for an old Celeron it too much. I will keep the NAS in a cellar.
I may stream movie (not simultaneously), I mainly will be using it as an "external HDD".

Below my selected parts:

Fractal FD-CA-NODE-304-BL, 6 bay 3,5"
Intel G3900
MSI H110I-Pro
Corsair CP-9020095-EU VS Series VS350 ATX/EPS 80 PLUS 350W
Kingston KVR21N15S8/4 RAM 4Go 2133MHz DDR4

Total: 280€

Is the CPU right (overkill? good for my need?).
PSU: Overkill? Any cheaper and quiet model to buy?
RAM: is 4GB enough? Should I go for a better brand?

Thanks.

That PSU is garbage: pick a Silverstone ST-30SF V1.0

With synology what you get is an easy all around solution with very good software, even their hybrid raid design is pretty good if you plan on adding more drives down the road, personally im more a windows 2011 + Stablebit, but i also own a synoloty, and probably in time my next server move will be to a 12 bay synology.

With the node304 and no gpu you can almost any PSU you like.

Depends on your usage, if its a pure file server then the celeron is more than enough, if you plan to do some transcoding or vm, then probably not.

Again depends on what you going to do, for a pure file server, 4gb should be enough, for anything else i would probably go 8gb.

I would go with lucas suggestion.

Thanks Luca and Abula.

I have a Syno at work, super easy to setup that's right, but starting 2 bay they get expensive.

I will transcode movie from time to time (I have a lot of remux), only one at a time and file sharing.
Should I upgrage RAM and CPU?

The PSU has been changed, thanks.

Iron Wolf 8TB are noisy, like all HDD, I'm really getting tired of hdd noise. I find my WD RED 4TB quietest but still.

I got lucky to find them at 199€ each on amazon. I really needed space. All HDD are noisy. My workstation only has SSDs and it's wonderful.

I have the 4TB Ironwolfs in my new NAS, they are not that quiet, the spin isn't bad, but the accesing is a clicky. They are good VFM though. Certainly not going to be buying 8TB of SSDs any time soon.

Thank you very much for the feedback, i also agree that no matter what HDD are noisy, but personally i find today drives much less offensive than 20 years ago, specially WD blacks, atm on my server running a mix of Seagate 4tb, WD Green 5tb, and now WD Red/White 8tb from WD My books, they come much better packed than OEM drives, and i find them adequate for the server, not silent by any means but acceptable, what i dont like atm is the temps, seems the WD helium drives run 5C hotter than the other drives.
