What notebook to replace current laptop + desktop pc ?

More popular than ever, but some are still very noisy.

What notebook to replace current laptop + desktop pc ?

Post by AuraAllan » Thu Apr 22, 2010 12:55 pm

Hi there

I'm looking for a laptop that can replace my laptop and my desktop pc.
Having one machine instead of two will make things alot easier.

My desktop pc:
Jetway 780G motherboard
4 GB RAM
AMD 4850e

My laptop:
Toshiba Portegé R500 (12,1")
Intel U7600 (1,2 GHz)
1,5 GB RAM
GMA 950

As said i'm looking for a laptop that will replace both these systems.
I would like something like this:

Silent or VERY low noise
Atleast 2 GB RAM or the possibility to upgrade to 2 GB or more.
Max. 2 Kg
Max. 14"
Enough GPU power to run HD material
DVI or HDMI output (1920*1080)
Dual core CPU with computing power like the 4850e
SSD would be nice but I can put my Intel x25-m in the laptop myself if it comes with a HDD

What are my options here?

I'm totally lost. There are so many laptops available.

I think the big question is how much is your budget.

Prices vary quiet a bit from place to place but ~$1000 is max I guess.

A $500 laptop (in USA) could easily be $750 or more in Denmark.

Lenovo X201 looks very nice but it's ~$2300
Acer Aspire TimelineX 3820-series (~$1050) looks good but I don't know anything about them.

So i'm waiting for Acer TimelineX 1830T to be released. Should be released in June.
It should be €549 (around $731)

It should be very good value for money with them following specs:

11,6" LED-backlit 1,366x768 display (probably glossy :x )
Intel's Core ix processors (rumors say Core i5-520UM)
4GB of DDR3 RAM
640GB HDD
802.11n Wi-Fi
gigabit LAN
Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR
webcam
5-in-1 card reader
three USB 2.0 ports
HDMI
VGA-out
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.
