New Computer Help

Post by arsenal009 » Thu Oct 13, 2016 10:18 pm

Hey guys,

I'm looking to upgrade my CPU case, motherboard, processor, heatsink on processor, & ram while keeping everything cool & quiet.

I currently have a GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 960 2GB WINDFORCE 2X OC EDITION
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... -_-Product

I would like to keep the video card but buy a new case. One that has a clearance so I can fit a similar video card, but one with 3 fans in the future, such as this one:

GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 970 4GB XTREME GAMING OC EDITION
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... -_-Product

I would like to keep these parts:

2x Hard drives: HITACHI Deskstar 5K3000
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... 6822145475

1x DVD Burners: LG GSA-4167B BK
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6827136071

1x Power Supply: SeaSonic SS-750KM3 750W
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6817151087

Would I be able to salvage my heatsink or would I need a new one?
http://www.silentpcreview.com/prolima-megahelams

I want to play games at 1080p & 60 fps.

To sum up, can someone recommend me a CPU case, motherboard, processor, heatsink on processor, & ram (16GB) for my needs.

Thanks

Case = Fractal Design Define R5, will allow you use the optical drive, easy to work with, good overall design and built. I would add another frontal fan, to have 2 in and 1 out.

CPU = If you are overclocking i5 6600K, if you are not overclocking i5 6500

Mobo = If you arent overclocking Asus H170 Pro Gaming, if you are overclocking ASUS Z170A

Heatsink = Scythe Kotetsu/Ninja4 or Thermalright Macho RevB

Memory = Whatever you like, i would try to check the QVList to ensure compatibility, just go with standard height no need to get tall heatsinks.

Hey,

For the heatsink, you don't think I should go for something that is heatsink only like my previous heatsink?

If you've got the first version of the Megahalem, it's only compatible with Socket 775 and 1366. However, Prolimatech does sell an adapter kit for Socket 1151. You might have to contact them to see who sells it.

Alright, I emailed them. If they don't have it, would you recommend the scythe kotetsu or the new Megahalem: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... ce=afc-%zn

As for tower, can you recommend me a full tower as well?

Thanks

The R5 is an amazing case- I'm not sure you'd need something bigger. I just bought one; they are on sale right now at Newegg for $79.99 free shipping for the R5 Blackout silent.

You have many options for configuration, but let's break it down.

You can use a big 330mm card and keep all the drive cages, it has room for 7 hard drives and 2 SSDs, plus 2 optical drives
You can use 2 MONSTROUS 440mm cards and still install 3 hard drives and 2 SSDs
You can swap the drive cages around and install a single 440mm card (this is huge... like 15" long) and 4 hard drives, 2 optical drives, and 2 SSDs.

It's a big case. It's heavy and very solid. I can't think of many people who need something bigger.
It also comes with several pounds of sound-absorbing panels pre-cut and installed.

The latest-gen intel CPUs are pretty awesome. I got an i5-6600k but I really wanted an i7-6700.
If you are really wanting to go passive on the CPU, I wouldn't recommend overclocking as it can really increase the heat output.

As Abula mentioned, the R5 is a great case.

Pricing in Canada is a little skewed...really high prices for both Scythe and Prolimatech. Chances are, a Noctua will be your best bet. Still need to know whether or not you plan to overclock/overvolt the CPU.

Alright, you guys have convinced me about the case.

I can get the Scythe Kotetsu for $108 here: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/offer-listing/ ... dition=new

Or should I go with Noctua instead? If so, which one?

I do not plan to overclock cpu.

The Noctua NH-U14S is well worth considering at around $90.

If you like Prolimatech go for it, its still a good cooler, doesnt get recommended as much as it ends up more expensive than the kotetsu, but as steve said, in canada pricing is different and others come into play. I think loadstar suggestion is pretty good, same price as the prolimatech but with the fan already, Asus motherboard will take the NF-A15 PWM that comes with it to 300rpms with FanXpert.

Hey, I was thinking about it, and have decided I will overclock the cpu.

Therefore, I will end up going with Abula's suggestion of i5 6600K processor & ASUS Z170A motherboard.

However, I do not want to overclock memory. I was thinking of getting this ram: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... 6820232258

Is it compatible with the motherboard, also, do you guys think it's good or do you recommend something else?

Thanks

It probably will work, but my recommendation is go to Asus Z170 A main webpage, then to support, then to Memory/Device Support, then Download the Z170-A DRAM Report, in there you will find a bunch of memory that has been tested by Asus that should be compatible.

You might want to double check those links as those are for Newegg US, not Canada.

I also second the Noctua NH-U14S: I bought this last year and it's silent to me even with my Fractal R5's side panel removed, let alone with it in place.

Hey guys, thanks for all the recommendations.

This is what I ended up going with:

Fractal Design Define R5
i5 6600K
ASUS Z170A
Scythe Kotetsu
G.SKILL Aegis 64GB RAM

I am now in the market for an SSD to load Windows onto as well as games. I'm looking for something ~500GB. Do you guys have any recommendations?

Thanks

Hi I have the following SSDs:
2x Sandisk Ultra II 960GB these have been fine no compliants
1x Crucial CX100 512GB again fine, its still going strong
1x Sandisk X100 256GB msata seems to be fine after multiple linux installs.

I'd suggest getting a good deal on a Sandisk or Crucial in the Black Friday/Cyber Monday deals. My two Ultra IIs were deals last year.

Samsung 850 Evo is my first choice. There are some nice sale prices out there this weekend for SSDs. If you were in the US, Adorama has it for $130.

I live in Canada. I can get 850 Evo 500GB for $189 including shipping here: http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX55510
Or I can get Crucial MX300 525GB for $136 incl. shipping here: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/offer-listing/ ... dition=new

Is it worth it to pay more for the Samsung?

PS: Prices are in CAD

Until they sold out, newegg.ca had the Samsung for $160 CAD incl shipping. For that price, I'd say yes, it's better. For $50CAD more....maybe not. For light duty use, they are pretty similar. If you plan to hammer the SSD with heavy loads, then the Samsung is better. Here's a head to head benchmark comparison for your amusement.
