Radeon Xpress 200 heat output

To any users of this chipset...

How much heat does the northbridge give off with the onboard VGA enabled? How does it compare to other K8 chipsets, such as nForce3, nForce4, VIA, SiS, etc.?

I'm also interested in the answer to this question for my next build.

In addition to the NB, I'd also like to know how much heat the built-in 9600 gives off during various kinds of use.*

edit: *Relatively speaking, of course; different setups with this chipset will allow for cooler or hotter temps.

My MSI RS-480M2 IL (based on the Xpress 200) is at stock passive and has a quite meagre heastink. When I ran it naked with a very low speed fan (7000alcu @ 3V) it got hot, but not burning. (50ish degrees). It did not show any signs of instability at all. It is IOW very low power, maybe something like the Nforce 2.

Sounds promising, thanks for the reply. Were the onboard graphics being stressed at the time, or only the CPU/memory?

I just built a computer for my friend very recently with that chipset, MSI RS-480M2 IL motherboard, and unfortunately I didn't have any chance to really stress the system to see how high it went, but it was using the onboard graphics.

With my raytek temp gun it was about 115 degrees farheinheit if I remember correctly in an Antec P160, stock fan in back, stock athlon cooler, enermax 460w power supply's model number that evades my memory, but with two fans while it was in idle. Didn't have any problems with stability, but I wasn't expecting to in idle either.

Hope that info helps somewhat. Won't get any chance anytime soon to test it as he's gone working for a few weeks.

So what's that, ~32*C? And I'm assuming this was the temp. of the chipset heatsink, and not the bare chipset, correct?

Let's wait for RS482

Existing Xpress 200 core logics are produced on 130nm processes, but the new chips will use 110nm.

110nm is good.

What I'd really like to see is a low-power/mobile chipset available in a mATX or ATX form factor. Physically, are there any differences between RS480 in the desktop and RS480 in a laptop? If one were to install laptop drivers, I wonder if it would be possible to take advantage of the power saving features?
