Motherboard with AMD's FP2 or FP3 socket CPUs?

Post by monnier » Sat Sep 27, 2014 8:16 am

I'd like to replace my fanless AMD E350 motherboard with something a bit faster. AMD nowadays has CPUs that are substantially faster while staying within the same power envelope (around 18W), using socket FP2 or even more recently FP3 (I'm thinking for example of the A6-5345M, A6-7000, A8-5545M or the A10 Pro-7350B).

Yet, I can't seem to find any motherboard that takes those CPUs. IIUC these are BGA, so the CPU would be soldered on the motherboard (as was the case for the E350).

Can someone point me to a motherboard that uses AMD's FP2 or FP3 socket?
[ Ideally, it should be Mini-ITX and fanless, but since I haven't found any at all so far, I'm interested in pretty much anything related. ]

Please excuse the extremely late reply, found this thread hoping for more info on FP3 boards.

FP3 is actually a rare and exotic beast -- the embedded-market solder-down AMD R-series socket (Kaveri/Steamroller core based). TDP is in the 17-35W range, far above fanless, but with higher performance. Here's the SKU list, if you like: http://www.amd.com/Documents/2nd_Gen_Rs ... _Brief.pdf

What you're actually looking for is "FT3b" -- Kabini, Temash, and G-series embedded SoCs. Those are Jaguar core based -- an iteration after the e350. They're available up to 4 cores with higher clock rates and a healthy IPC improvement.

Here's a fanless ASRock board on NewEgg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... -_-Product

You might also look into the Gizmo2 for smaller form-factor but lower performance http://www.gizmosphere.org/products/gizmo-2/

Or go looking for various industrial/embedded vendors by googling product names out of AMD's G-series sku list: http://www.amd.com/Documents/AMDGSeries ... tBrief.pdf

Thanks. I'm still looking, so it's definitely not too late.

Indeed for the 35W parts, but 17W is not that much higer than E-350's 18W ;-), so I don't see why wouldn't it allow fanless operation (especially since't it's soldered down: there's no need to accomodate the possibility of replacing it with a 35W part)?

But this ASRock system is only rated at 1.5GHz, so on sequential workloads, it's probably not that much faster than my E-350 at 1.6GHz.

BTW, I have found a few products using FP2 sockets:

- iBASE's SI-32-N and SI-38N digital signage fanless systems. Price unknown.
- Contec's DS-380D (seems identical to SI-32-N). Price unknown.
- Kontron's KTA40M/mITX a mini-ITX board. Lots of I/O, but not fanless, and expensive.
- Some COM Express boards.

The FP3 socket seems only used in laptops, sadly.
