POLL: Does SCPR Forum need more topic diversity?! Thoughts..

Post by Athlon Powers » Wed May 07, 2003 5:15 am

This site need more diversity! This forum is geared toward ONE THING, nothing new to do if you are bored, just quieting computers.

You need more diverse subjects, such as General Hardware, Off Topic, Overclocking, Cooling and Quieting, Networking, Motherboards, Peripherals and Video Related.

If you did this you might get more people to come to this site because the forum would be geared towards more things than just quieting computers, even though PC quieting could still be your main theme.

You also need better chatsoftware such as FuseTalk4 because it offers more administrative and management features and better ease of use.

Members, please vote and tell us what your views on this are and if you have any comments please state them!

I really think that there are enough other forums out there for those other subjects.

The really good thing about SPCR is that it is totally focused on ONE thing and not a mismash of everything !!

Ditto what ruprag said!

Maybe the poll answers wording was not thought out too well, but I think there should be at least a 3rd answer:

No, it's just fine as it is.

That's because I do care about how it's laid out, and it doesn't need any changes at this time.

Haven't voted - want to vote No - I do care!

Figure I am happy for this to be a specialised Silent site. There is some place to get in the bar, off-topic or general, but certainly for Overclocking, networking, video etc I figure it is best to pick from the other sites out there ([H], Ars, OCAus, AMDMB ...).

I am much more comfortable trying to query/answer/help here on the assumption people want quiet; we cannot so freely/confidently talk Barracuda, Panaflo, Papst etc if people meant o/c.

And it almost crosses another current thread: in general if we discourage people whose main interest (for visiting SPCR and fora) is anything other than silencing PCs they use/produce/sell components for then that would be a good thing IMHO.

Hmph. So far the outcome is not too good....

Sorry, I cant figure out how to add a "No, I like it the way it is" to the poll.

I definately would like an offtopic thread, mainly because I go offtopic alot, hell I might have the record.
**What would be really cool, is if we had a chat room that we could go into and hang out with fellow SPCR members and just chat/BS or whatever. It would also be really helpful for people like rosey_toes, because we could just say come into the chatroom and ill walk you through (whatever) process, instead of having to go back over old topics to them, and write back and forth for a week or more to fix a little problem. I know there is an IRC room already, but I dont have IRc, I dont really like it, and Im not going to dl it again. It would just be more convienent if we had a chatroom built onto the site.

Possibly an IRC gateway embedded in a webpage? (an applet perhaps? ... I know I'm a stickler for Java ... I promise I'm not working for Sun!)

Edit: great minds think alike, eh ... didn't see the previous post when I posted mine.

Some possibilities:
http://www.jpilot.com/ (Registration is $50 ... PayPal donation anyone? :) )
http://www.alphaworks.ibm.com/tech/irc ibm + java = true love
http://www.valinor.sorcery.net/clients/ ... pplet.html looks like a good list of java-based clients

I dont know if the server you are on could take the extra load? And I dont know how to setup a chatroom or anything like that. But I think that it would encourage people to hang around the forum more, and maybe in the process of hanging out and sharing ideas and experiences in real time, more ideas will come out at a much faster pase. Of course if we did get some great idea, or discover a new holy grail of silence, then we could go back to the text forum and start a tread on it so the information isnt lost.

Seriously, with members continuously coming in around here, I think there's plenty to talk about and read about on a daily basis. Logon in the morning and there's almost 2 pages of unread threads that have come up. I'm sold with this place being information rich and still be a site that changes enough to warrant dropping in every day (or few hours!). Also, I'm sure we've been attracting new members, they're only adding to the forum information.

I love it the way it is. Diversifying will rob this site of its character: the best and only place to go for quiet computing information. Plus, MikeC is already doing more than he has to in requesting and reviewing and posting about hardware that can make OUR lives quieter (better). I would never ask him to take on MORE such topics, or farm it out to someone else, just so that I'm not bored at SPCR. If I want to know about user experience with the MSI Neo-FIS2R, I'll log into Anandtech or HardOCP.

Mike, keep up the good work! AND THANKS!

Have to agree that I like the specialization. I would hate to see SPCR become something it is not and expand out and try to cover everything.

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/ It is just impossible to keep up with that site. It forces you to get in with a noob question, get some help, and leave as it is just to much. Example ''There are currently 619 members and 598 guests on the site. | Most users ever online was 1730 on 01-07-03 at 09:40 PM."

I like the way SPCR is, with the new updates and small changes to meet current demands.

It needs to stay specialized as it is.

We already have an off-topic section, but maybe a 'general harware questions' section would be okay, just don't need to de-emphasize the silent sections by adding more than one room/section that goes outside of PC silencing.

Any kind of impromptu-chat feature would be nice. I noticed somebody mentioned that we already have an IRC channel which can serve that purpose. Although I'm not a big fan of IRC, I do use it, but any new live-chat feature would be nice.
