Fanless PSUs in Silverstone Fortress FT02

Post by Ubtree » Wed Oct 08, 2014 2:00 pm

I would like to use a Seasonic SS-520FL (or its clone, the Silverstone Nightjar NJ520) in an FT02 build. This would require the ventilated side with the power cable socket to face upwards (a little below the ventilated top cover of the FT02).

Instructions for the PSUs state that the side of the case with the large grille must be facing upwards. So, would it be a problem using one of these PSUs with an FT02? Or do the instructions for the PSUs simply mean that (in an ordinary, non-rotated case) the PSUs musn't be installed upside down with their unventilated base uppermost?

It'll be fine. In the FT02 the PSU basically gets exposed to fresh air from the outside and the heat will leave the upper face of the case by natural convection, drawing a very slow current of air through the PSU from the back.

All Seasonic is worried about is that some numpty who lives in a sweatbox is going to position the PSU with the vent downwards over some massive high power components (or better still, an open fire!) with absolutely nowhere for the heat to go, then write to them and ask if they can have a replacement when it blows. OK, this is an unrealistic scenario but as a serious company you do have to 'cover your arse' while these stupid people remain on the loose.
