Silent PSU for X99 / 5930k photo editing PC

Post by Mazzam » Fri May 13, 2016 5:09 am

'm building a PC for a friend and would like some recommendations for a silent, efficient PSU for an X99 / 5930k PC which will only really be used for RAW photo editing and watching movies, no gaming whatsoever. I'm presuming it won't need to be that powerful maybe around 650W should suffice. It won't be overclocked either so just running at stock with a couple SSD's and a couple hard drives.

Cheers.

Welcome to SPCR.

Not sure if it'll have a big impact, but Broadwell-E is due out in early June.

What are you using for graphics?
What's the case?

Stress load power = 140W TDP for 5930k CPU, ?? for graphics, 50W for everything else (mobo, storage, fans, etc). So, 190W plus gfx card.

Thanks for that. ;)

The GPU he's using is a Radeon HD5450. He's got an old Silverstone 500w SST ST50F230 in a standard ATX case. Which I'm musing over whether to keep or not. The motherboard will all likelihood be a AsRock Fatal1ty x99m Killer. The actual CPU will be a Xeon E5 2643 V3 which equates to a 5930k though slightly less power.

I'd replace the PSU. It's a design from 2007/8 and doesn't derive the other voltages from the 12V...which is a Haswell requirement for one of the low power states. It's only 80% max efficiency, and won't have low standby power.

The 5450 is 19W. So, total system will be in the 200W range.

What country are you in...that'll narrow down the PSU availability. In general, I like the be quiet Straight Power 10 series. Always on...but low rpm fan is very quiet.

Its best to test what you have, the Silverstone 500w SST ST50F230 should be more than enough to power the setup, the question goes into if its quiet enough for what you wish to accomplish noise wise. In case the silverstone doesnt furfill what you are looking, here some PSU to look for,

SeaSonic Platinum Series SS-400FL2
If you want a totally fanless its a good choice and more than enough to power your setup, worth saying that some poeple have found them to have coil whine, personally i own 3 seasonic platinum and none have it or if they do i cant hear it at all.

EVGA SuperNOVA 650 P2,
i do own one on my test bench and its been perfect, no issues whatsoever, dead silent with the eco on, but some people are not recommending it out of some quality issues, personally i still recommend it until it does something bad to me.

be quiet! DARK POWER PRO 11 550W
From what i have read, i dont own it, it runs the fan always, but very low, so in case you dont want a semi fanless, and looking for a very quiet psu, this would be my choice.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm in the U.K. He's inclined to get a new PSU although his current one does run very silent

I think that Abula forgot to mention the Corsair RM550x and the fanless Super Flower Golden Silent (either the 430W or the expensive 500W one) among the available options. A cheaper alternative might be the Be Quiet Straight Power E10 400W (not modular).

I second Lucas suggestions also, in the UK scan seems one of the best to buy, here some options from it,

be quiet! DARK POWER PRO 11 550W Power Supply £115.86 Inc VAT
Corsair 550 Watt RMx Fully Modular RM550X ATX PSU/Power Supply £74.99 Inc VAT
Seasonic SS-400FL2 400W Modular Power Supply £99.98 Inc VAT
EVGA SuperNOVA 650 Watt P2 Fully Modular PSU/Power Supply £99.98 Inc VAT

Many thanks for that; the Corsair RMx is looking very appealing, that's a decent price.

...and the RMx series has fantastic reviews too. I'm going to take a 650W version for my new photo editing PC (only a 6700K here :P ).

A 6700k will be more than adequate! ;)
I just picked up the 650w RMx for £64 from Scan which was on sale. I'm sure it's way more than my friend will need but it was cheaper than the 550w, plus it will definitely stay silent.

Many thanks for all contributors suggestions. 8)
