PSU replacement. i5 + gtx 1080

Post by cpaqf1 » Tue Jun 28, 2016 6:45 pm

Hi,

I'm going to replace my fanless seasonic 520, there's too much whine, and otherwise the system is silent.

i5 4690, 16gb ram, h97i plus. I'm currently running a strix 970 but I'll probably be upgrading to something like the 1070 or the 1080, so I probably need around 600-650 to be safe? or perhaps something like 1000w so it can constantly run fanless?

what PSU would you guys recommend? price isn't really an issue here. I just want it to be as quiet as possible under load, and if possible for the fan to turn off at idle.

I'm in canada, and I'd like to order from newegg if possible.

thanks!

Your stressed load power (assuming ~200W for GPU) is ~340W. Heavy game load is under 290W.

Any of these three would work.

Here some good options to replace your PSU,

CORSAIR RM550X $139.99 CAD
I have 3 builds with them, one 550 two 850, and all been dead silent, no coil whine that i could percieve, even really close. Im about to do two more builds with them for friends, one 750 and one 550, this is the PSU im recommending more, buying in the US because of its pricing.

be quiet! Dark Power Pro 11 550W $179.98 CAD
I havent done a build with them as too expensive for me to get a hold of them, and newegg doesnt take my creditcards, but its a PSU that has been getting great reviews, one thing that i like about them is the fan is always on, but at inaudible levels, weather the price is justifiable over the RX... idk, probably not, but this is one of the PSU that i really want to try someday if bequiet use amazon or bh for a supplier.

EVGA SUPERNOVA 650 P2 $131.99 CAD
Im using one on my test bench, and i have not perceive any whine or noise at all, dead silent with ECO on, with the switch off is it does move agresive the fan, but i only did to test, with eco on to me its one of the best PSU in the market, specially at its price. Maybe lucas sees the thread, as he has some comments about it not being that great, but my personal experience i can say anything bad, to me for its price in the US is a slightly better offer than RMx, but its very close, and with the pricing that has gotten in the last month on the RMx a bunch of friends bought them over the EVGAs.

Probably the safest is the Corsair, i haven't seen a single person here say they have coil whine, not to say there wont be any, as i do think its a combo of hardware, not purely the PSUs, but its remarkable that i haven't seen a bad comment yet out of SPCR forum fellows, so thats what i would recommend you go with.

As side comment, i personally still think Seasonic is very good, most of my personal builds are with them, and i havent had any coil whine or elecrtical noise, luck or not, im pleased with how they perform, and even a new upgrade for my HTPC ill be using the new upcoming PRIME Fanless 600W, but i can understand since i seen a lot of people getting coil whine, to be moving away from the brand, but until i experience something bad with Seasonic is still my brand to go for my personal builds.

Please post your experience with either of the PSU you chose, as its great for other members to hear from people that are looking for good PSU for their builds.

Don't think it matters at your loads. Here's a comparison at hardware.info in googlish.

Tom's Hardware found the 550x's fan to be off until 275W while under 35-45C ambient conditions and then only popped up to 600rpm well past your stress load. So, worst case, in the summer, the fan would turn on during heavy gaming and your gfx card will be louder.

Get the 650w if you think you'll go SLI and need the extra PEG connectors. O/W, save the $'s.

I don't plan on ever going sli but you're telling me a 650w psu could support two 1080 in Sli?
