Is Seasonic X Series still solid?

Is Seasonic X Series still solid?

Post by BrianF » Mon Apr 03, 2017 2:47 pm

I've been out of the loop for a while and I'm just wondering if the X Series is still considered a solid buy for quietness. Have they made any changes (good or bad) since 2009 when SPCR reviewed? I see they are still... not cheap. Has anything come along which is on par with it, perhaps for a few less $?

Thanks.

Without knowing your PC build/power need or country (for specific make/model availability), the generic answer is the seasonics are still decent. I've been recommending Corsair's RMx series.

They have been superseded by the Platinum series which you might want to consider instead.

Thay have been not superseded, the Platinum complemented the X-Series.

BTW, both X-series and Platinum-series are now EOL, the new Prime Platinum/Gold recently superseded them (cannot say whether those are quieter).

@OP: I second the advice for the Corsair RM550x, or alternatively for the EVGA SuperNOVA G2 650 (*not* the freshly released "G3", not the smaller "G2 550") if cheaper. An "always on fan" option is the Be Quiet Straight Power E10 500W CM.

Thanks everyone for your feedback.

I wasn't really aware of the RM550x. Looks like it might be a winner (if a little pricey here in Canada). Do we care that the fan uses a rifle bearing?

Cheers.

Does the G3 550w also have the same aggressive fan profile as the larger models?

It's mostly untested.

So, given the G2 550 was already more conservative (aggressive) than its 650W sibling, given the increased power density of the G3s lineup, given that EVGA lowered the advertised G3s fanless range from 40-50% (of the previous lower capacity G2s) to 20%, IMO it's a safe measure to wait until some serious reviews come out.

Personally I won't bet it will be as quiet as the G2 650 was (is) but, as said above, who knows?

No, as it will likely outlast the unit's warranty (10 years).
