There is also the problem of both nvidia and AMD GPUs not going fully to idle clock speeds (and thus presenting additional power drain) if you use more than one display. I don't think I ever saw an idle test that took this into account.

I have a 100W+ idle, with an overclocked 4790k, GTX1080 with a multi-display setup and a multitude of drives. With that said, I only ever reached a grand total of about 450W total power draw at the socket. Yes, with a OC'd CPU and an also OC'd 1080.
