Your FAQ for Hard drive silencing says there are only two commercial solutions - silent drive (enclosure), or novibes (suspension), and you say that silent drive is dubious because of heat buildup.

But I just read your review of the 'smartdrive' (enclosure), and your review shows that temperature buildup is actually lower than the novibes solution - so it seems that smartdrive is a better solution than novibes, since it is cooler?

The FAQ does need updating. Thanks for the sharp eyes!
NoVibe does something Smart Drive does not: completely eliminate vibration into the cae as a source of noise. This is why the seek noise is audible in Smart Drive while it is not when a drive is decouple-mounted as in NoVibe. Tough to say one is better than the other, as the Smart Drive does reduce broadband noise a bit more. (Enclosing the drive does makes a difference.)
Silent Drive is a different animal altogether. Pretty shoddily made, when you come right down to it, and IMHO, poorly designed. I'd never use one on any drive I value.

I have the smartdrive, and i dont mount it. I place it on a strip of foam on the bottom of my case. I can't hear my harddrive at all. I'm using a wd 120gb special edition.

It sounds like my WD 1200JB drive suffers from more operating noise than vibration.

I'm not sure sitting it on foam would cure my sound probs. :?

I'm doing the same with my Smart Drives housing Barracuda IV 40GB and 60GB. I can still hear seek noise, however, as the room where I have my computer has hardwood floor even though I place my computer on bubble wrap. In my former apartment which was carpeted, I couldn't hear seek noise from Barracuda IV 40GB at least.
