Seagate warranty
What is Seagate's current warranty for the Baracuda IV? And for the Baracuda V?
3 year warrenty http://www.seagate.com/cda/products/dis ... 84,00.html and 5 year service life but I think the hard drive manufactuers are thinking of cutting it down to 1 year
Seagate warranty for OEM vs. retail
According to the recent Tom's Hardware article on this topic, retail packaged drives that indicate a three year warranty will have a three year warranty. It's not clear to me if future Seagate retail drives will have this warranty, or just current/old stock.
Any Seagate manufactured after Oct 1 will have a 1 year warranty. It's the manufacture date that's important, not the date you bought it.
So if you're getting a V, you'll most definetely get a 1 year. But some stores probably still have IV's in stock the were made before Oct. If the warranty is important to you call the stores to ask them specifically what the date is on the drive before you buy it.

Hmm, any germans out there?
Would be very interesting to me if MY 'Cuda V only has 1 year warranty, or if it actually has (like I thought it would HAVE to have) 2 years, as it is indicated by german law. At least that is what i thought so far (the law is rather new, one year old or so... before that it was just 6 month warranty)
