Hdd overview from C't

Post by jojo4u » Sat Dec 14, 2002 8:17 am

Here are the complete results of the C't for interesting hdd which I originally typed for a german forum.

x/y ms = seek time without/with AAM
xy MB/s = average transfer rate, read and write (these are rounded the same)
x/y/z = niose in sone idle/seek with AAM/seek without AAM

benchmark x/y = benchmark with/without AAM
Anwendungsindex= Testing methology similar to the SR one. A playback of previously recorded patterns. Bigger disks are better because testing is done in a 40GB block.

Only different features in a family are mentioned.

IBM 180GXP 7200upm 42MB/s
60GB (IC35L060AVV207-0): 10.5ms/14.5ms, 0.4/0.8/1.6, benchmark 11.5/14.5

Hello jojo4u:

So, the IBM 180GXP 60GB is the quietest at idle and seek with AAM. (BTW, what does AAM mean specifically? I'm assuming it's the quiet mode.) And it beats the 'Cuda IV (the next quietest) in transfer speed by 42MB/s vs 35MB/s. The 'Cuda IV is quieter in the "fast" mode, though it is slower in it's fast mode than the IBM is in it's quiet mode!

Seems like the IBM 180GXP 60GB is the hard drive to go with!

AAM is acoustic management, you're right. Yes the new IBM 60GB has the sound level of the old Barracuda IV 40GB and 50% more capacity. Especially since it only draws ~5W in idle mode > good passive cooling. (Barracuda draws ~8-10W).
But there are 2 other contenders: The new Maxtor Plus 9 160GB (6Y160L0) has 0.6/0.8/2.3. It is a 2-platter model and is less noisier than a 2-platter Barracuda IV and V. Makes me wounder how quiet the 80GB model is... The specs for the Maxtor are for 1- and 2-platter models together. It should draw ~7W in idle.
The Samsung V60 120Gb is only 5400upm 2-platter but very quiet for its capacity. It draws 4,5W. It should be a good inexpensive mass data storage. But it has no FDB. I believe it'll get louder over the mounths.

in which German forum do you post your datas of the c't?
It's much easier to discuss there!
