so why is the 80G IDE Barracuda 7200.7 50 dollars cheaper than the same drive in the SATA version?

I'd really like to have 2 SATA barracudas in a RAID 0 in my next setup, but if the prices stay like that, it won't be an option :(

I can't say for sure, but I'll take a guess.

The SATA drive has an 8mb cache, and I don't think the other does.

The SATA drive is in much higher demand/lower production right now, so prices have not had a chance to come down.

I like the idea of SATA Raid myself, but the noise is a factor. I'm going to try out a WD Raptor 36gb 10k rpm drive (Friday I hope!) and see how noisy it is. How about 2 of those puppies??

Yeah, I'd love to hear the noise on those from a SPCR person for an accurate glimpse at what I'd think. $190 for 36 gigs is steep, but damn would a RAID 0 perform... hopefully prices will drop and capacities will rise.

Let us know how it goes. I was thinking of getting one myself, for a boot/app drive.
